I've backed up my 24 series 1 ok apart from Disc 4. This is the first disc I have had an issue with backing up. It is region 2 with no RCE. Usually I have used DVDBackUp without a hitch, but on this one I have tried for the first time OSex, Yadex and Mac The Ripper, most recently just now with MTR 1.5 (looks very good BTW geezerbutz/WW, will be using again). Where required I have accessed all the chapters in DVDPlayer first. It seems that the process starts ok but only decodes the first episode than flobs out (my destination VIDEO_TS folder or disc image is always between 1.69GB or 1.72GB). Here is a screen shot from MTR 1.5 (I hope, first attempt to post a screen shot)

I hope it is legible but I had to get it dowm to 50kb. No doubt there is a better way to post the info, sorry. My grasp of IFOs VOBs etc is not what it could, or should be, and I have not recorded all the error messages on the previous back up attempts. If someone thinks that info would help I am happy to replicate backups and record the outcome. The disc itself plays back fine. If the answer might be just that some discs have faulty data preventing their back up but not preventing them playing back then perhaps someone could confirm that?

Many thanks if you have any ideas,

Oh well try again with that screen capture. Couldn't preview it..I am supposed to actually type out in full aren't I replacing filename.gif with my filename and then choosing the filename for Image 1? (I ask in case when I post this there is a ? instead of an image after this fullstop).

What is the condition of the disc like? Try cleaning it, and then see what happens. I'm not too familiar with MTR's little info thingamabob but 'error reading' usually seems to indicate a problem with the media. Does your disc play in your computer and on a settop box?
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

Jaunty, don't get to bent out of shape. I've been trying to copy disc 8 of a 10 disc collectors series of Batman the animated series to no avail. It may very well be the disc the original is recorded on. I know this is a waste of money but see if you can rent the same disc your trying to copy or borrow a friends and see what happpens. I rented Phone booth and it wouldn't work borrowed one from a friend and it worked just fine. And the one I rented was clean and no scratches. Mabye some microscopic flaw that the drive seems to only pickup when recording, but not in play back.

  6. hey jaunty I had no problem backing up my copy of 24 season 1 disc 4 on region 2 I used dvd shrink and it worked fine. Must be your disc must either have a scratch or a error on it.

  7. I had this same problem with 24 season 1 disc 6. Finally wound up ripping it with dvd decrypter, separating out the episodes, and reauthoring them in TMPGEncDA. Worked fine then. The other discs were not a problem. Used Elby for them.

  8. If it was a recent purchase, you could probably take it back to the store and exchange it for the same title if you tell them that there is a problem with the playback (of course you're probably going to want to leave out the fact that the real problem is with ripping that disc).

Thanks everyone for your replies. the original disc is clean with no obvious marks and plays back fine. No real biggie I'll just take extra care of the original and see if a friend has one that will back up ok.
    Thanks again
