  1. Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum and in fact new to DVD burning as I've just bought a DVD writer (NEC ND1100). I've had no problems backing up some DVD movies onto Bulkpaq DVD+R but have this one particular original DVD movie that's causes problems. The DVD, purchased from Amazon, works fine as a video DVD in two standard DVD players attached to a television. However, the same disc refuses to be recognised on my NEC ND1100 burner and even on my Xbox. On the ND1100, Windows just says disc not present, and on the Xbox, it just keeps spinning, nothing but a black screen.

Because I'm new to this, I'm not sure what's different about this DVD in comparison to the other ones which I managed to copy perfectly. This DVD refuses to be recognised in 'computer' based drives. Is this sort of an encryption or something that I don't know about? And if at all possible (which I doubt because the drive won't even pick it up), how can it be overcome?

Thanks a million, look forward to reading your replies.

    Niraj.

    Hi,

Have you tried the simple possibilities?

If the DVD was new, not second hand, try cleaning the lens on Xbox and computer drive?

Usually in my experience the PC drive is less fussy about format of the disc contents but the standalone is less fussy with scratchs and marks on the surface of the disc.

Also my burner is more picky than my normal DVD drive in the PC.

Do you have another PC DVD drive of any kind that you can try? a friends perhaps?

  3. Thanks for the post zworg2, I followed your suggestions and cleaned the lenses of both drives, but to no avail. I doubted that that the problem as other DVDs worked and ripped fine. I then took the DVD to a friend's house and it worked on her DVD ROM fine. It was then that I realised that the DVD was a 2 layer disc as identified by DVD Decrypter. For some reason my DVD writer won't recognise dual layered DVDs, and I have no idea why the Xbox doesn't either.

    Thanks again.

    That seems a bit strange...
How old is the DVD drive? Have you checked with the manufacturer?
As for X-Box not reading dual layer - again odd....
I thought (dont quote me, as i dont have xbox only PS2) that there are some X-box games that are dual layer.....so am surprised that it doenst read dual layer DVD's.
The PS2 recognises dual layer and plays fine!
