Just to humour you, in case this isn't a blatant case of 0-daying - does it play alright on your (or someone else's if you don't have one) set-top player? It's not unknown for batches of discs to be bad.

Sounds stupid also but make sure it's not the blu-ray --- particularly if you got it from an "actual shop" (yes, they do still exist, I got some good cheap DVDs for birthday presents from one at the weekend!) they might have pulled the wrong thing out of their security drawer to put in the previously-empty case.

In either of those, return it and ask for a suitable replacement.

Otherwise, this is an unfortunate coming together of overzealous copy-protection and Sony's notorious penchant for similar. They're probably assuming that just because you might be able to make a hundred duplicates a day of that movie with your computer, you naturally will do, instead of ... i dunno ... actually watching it. Everyone is automatically a criminal. Shoulda seen the difficulty I had getting a clean rip of a Sony corp CD recently to use in my MP3 player instead of their low-bitrate supplied copies (or having to either pirate it or pay to download better quality ones from e.g. Amazon).
-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

why email? whoever reads this post will just post a reply in this thread. Make sure it's the regular dvd and not the bluray version. also you'll have to use ANYDVD or DVDFAB HD to rip the files because the disc has copy protection encryption.

  5. Guys thnx for the reply I have tried using ANYDVD & DVDFAB but still the DVD is not recognised & it is ejected automatically, & its not a Blue ray Disc, it is a normal DVD (offical verion) & not the pirated one.

It is playing on the Samsung HD DVD Player (H1080r) but not on my Sony DVD writer

I just bought Avatar, BD and DVD combo. The BD hangs up in my computer BD drive. Lots of pixelation and the video stalls, not watchable. Maybe AnyDVD HD needs a few more days for a decryption. I just want to watch in the BD, not copy it. I settled for watching the DVD version, but the quality sucks compared to the BD.

EDIT: The latest AnyDVD update fixed my Avatar BD playback problems. Now it works on both PCs with BD drives.

New writer but it would be worth checking for updated firmware and applying it, reboot, and try again

Then again you could search google for your particular model burner and see if others are having problems ... some models are just bad news.

Funny, I logged onto my homepage and saw this story:

'Avatar' Blu-ray Consumers Can't Watch DVD

    by Mike Ryan · April 30, 2010

"An unusual glitch has angered some "Avatar" Blu-ray owners. For these unlucky people, since the disc won't play on their Blu-ray players, their new "Avatar" DVD serves no real purpose other than to sit idly on the coffee table. "

The story goes on to blame the Blu owners for not updating their firmware, but then ends on this note:

"It appears the main culprit concerning playback issues with "Avatar" is, ironically, the disc's DRM (digital rights management). DRM, which is the very technology meant to prevent bootleggers from illegally copying the film, is the very technology preventing people who actually paid for the disc from watching the film. Even with updated firmware, a lot of Blu-ray players weren't prepared for these security measures.
Despite the security problems, bootleggers are having a field day. Pirated copies of "Avatar," according to Los Angeles Times, were available as early as January."

You've got to wonder if the studios are ever going to learn.

^^^^^This is old news since this was posted at AVS FORUMS the day the movie was released in Bluray. If I had software for my pc to playback bluray then I'd test the bluray disc of AVATAR out. But I only have that freaking buggy cyberlink power dvd from the retail LG bluray drive. The cyberlink powerdvd is crappy cause it doesn't always playback bluray content. Go figure!

I was able to make a backup copy of my Bluray Avatar using BD Rebuilder and had no problems playing it back in my Panasonic BD30 Bluray player. And I didn't need any firmware update to play the reg. Bluray disc.

AnyDVD 6.6.3.9 works perfectly for my Avatar BD/DVD combo purchased from Amazon US. Both Corel WinDVD 2010 Pro SP3 and Acrsoft TMT3 3.0.1.170 with the Avatar hotfix playback the BD without pixellation on my system. Best of all my standalone Blu-Ray player had no issues with playback of the Avatar BD. I didn't need to update the firmware. Surprisingly the DVD has nothing special when it comes to protections. Your standard CSS, Region 1, and RCE.

What kind of error do you get?
I used DVDFab Passkey and it works on Avatar, you launch Passkey then insert the DVD.
