I have some 700mb+ mpeg 1 files which I would like to turn into VCD or SVCD do I need to re-encode them as they are too large to fit onto one cd. I have tried turing them into bin/cue files which appears to work ie they play on the mac with VLC player but put them into a dvd player the movie is corrupt. I have tried ffmpeg but I am not sure which encoding I should use, I have tried svcd and vcd but no encoding takes place. I am not sure how to split the file with ffmpeg?

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

first off mpeg1 wont go to SVCD as thats mpeg2

if they are under 700 the easiest is to use VCDTOOLSX to compose each .mpeg into a .bin/.cue set which you can burn either with Toast 6 or the multitute of VCD/SVCD burners (MMB, FirestarterFX ...)

    does that make since?

That should not be an issue. See the Guide on CD capacity , on this site:
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/135642.php

To cut to the chase, the Guide states:
The capacity of a CD disc

    Abstract
You can fit on a S/VCD without overburning:
    - approx. 735 MB of MPEG data onto a 74min/650MB disc
    - approx. 795 MB of MPEG data onto an 80min/700MB disc
You can read the rest of the Guide, for an explanation of why this is possible.

correct, you can have up to 795 megs of mpeg for a .bin/.cue and they will fit onto a 700meg cdr

but you have to use the method I described of making the .bin/.cue using VCDTOOLSX (or some other app that can do mpeg to .bin/.cue

i just think VCDTOOLSX is the easiest

thanx guys. I have tried VCDtools and changed the mpeg1 to bin/cue, the resulting cd plays fine with VLC player, but not on my dvd player. I have done this method before with no problems but this partuclar mpeg1 does play! Any further suggestions would be great!

what app did you use to burn the .bin/.cue files?

if it was toast it HAS to be v6
if it was something else, id suggest Toast 6 or Missing Media Burner

  9. Save as a XA file not Bin/Cue. You can use VCD Tools for that. And burn in Toast.

interesting, with TOAST 6 i have never had a problem burning .bin/.cue files

    1. verify the .bin's play properly using VLC drag and drop the .bin to the app and it should start playing
    2. if they do play properly try a burner such as Missing media Burner or FirestarterFX

    these usuallyprocude perfect VCD/SVCD disks

OH did you remember to ensure VCD was clicked in VCDTOOLSX because i think the default is SVCD and perhaps thats the problem!!!!!!

  11. I had a somewhat similar problem with a MPEG 1 file that Toast 6.03 kept giving me a error message that there was a problem with the source material. The file was also large, around 745mb. I decided to try my hand with ffmpeg.

Start with the Video section first set up all the size and other requirements. Load file in top line and set location for finished file. If you want a VCD result in (bin, cue) go to Tools and in post processing set it to author as VCD. Click encode and go do some other work. You will see the progress panel that will let you know when it is finished. Take the cue file and drop it in toast and burn.

BTW the MPEG 1 file played fine in QT 6.5 before I tied ffmpeg. The disk Toast burned played perfectly in my DVD player.

I have put together an outline of what I did and posted it to one of my web sites. Go to http://www.rsb-video-sales.com/ffmpeg.html

If you still have some problems send me a private message and I will try to look at it and see if I can help. (I am not an expert at this). BTW you will have top do each of them separately.

Ok, I have followed your instructions but the files I finish with are an mpeg and an mp3 audio file. I can I burn these as toast says it does recognise the audio file?

    Thanks

Make sure that the mpeg plays in QT and you can also check it in Toast as well. I have used the Tools section of ffmpeg to author the output to a bin/cue and then I drop the cue file in toast under the copy tab.

So far I find ffmpeg to be very helpful. I had a large (2:37min) AVI that was only 692mb. I was able to split into two CD's and burn it. Toast did the encoding but it takes a couple of hours.

I am now trying a burn on my son's Dual 1.25 Ghz Panther G4. I have to see if I can get them done in less time than on my 500 mhz machine.

Try burning on a CD-RW disk first to make sure it plays.

Thanks Macman. Do you mean check the original mpeg or the converted mpeg which was produced by ffmpeg. I have tried to play the original mpeg with QT but the 'wrist watch' icon just stays on and nothing happens. The mpeg plays finr through VLC player ok, strangely.

    Thanks

Sounds to me it is possible that your QT mpeg2 is not functioning or is not installed. What version are you using? It is currently up to ver. 6.5, I use QT Pro ver. 6.5 and now I seem to be able to play almost any video in it.

If you need the mpeg2 component let me know. I can put a link on that page I have on my web site for you to download and install it. It is for OSX . I currently am running Jaguar 2.8.

Check the mpeg that was the output from ffmpeg and see if it plays in QT. In the mean time I will take a look at some of my notes to see if I wrote anything else down.

Regarding Your problems...Use VCD Builder to make burnable images from Your MPEG movies...

  21. Thanks for the note of caution Serbian. I was going to give him a link to the usenet group for Mac's where he could search for it if it had been posted. I bought mine when I upgraded to Jaguar.

    Thanks Macman and Galactica

I will get the mpeg2 component and report back after reviewing Macman's original instructions and see if I can get the KVCD onto a disc.

    Thanks

The poster wants to turn an mpeg1 into a VCD. Why does he need the MPEG2 playback component for this?

Hmmm.... I think the files I have are mpeg1 how can I found out. I have trying to mpegs either version 1 or 2 on cd for months. I have had some success in turning them into bin & cue files. But sometimes they don't won't ie they are recognised by the dvd player but I get a blank screen, and strangely the time counter, counts down from the end of the film?

    Any help?
