  1. I am using Sonic MyDVD that came with my DVD burner. I use it with my Adaptec capture card to transfer home VHS to DVD. Then one day MyDVD gets an runtime error! I checked the Sonic website and seems that others have the same problem. I have the latest version of MyDVD which Sonic claims to solve the runtime error. But still got the error! I don't get the splash screen.

I un-installed the latest version and re-installed the version that came with my DVD. However now I get an Invalid Pointer error message when I click on the capture icon.

I tried to use Ulead Video Studio 5 that came with my firewire card but it does not detect the adaptec capture card.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Sonic MyDVD - the biggest POS "authoring" app out there. Mine stopped working too ...when I threw it into the river
I suggest you ditch both (Ver. 5??? ) and get yourself a decent authoring/capping app and a good editing app. Search around here and you'll get plenty of ideas for apps that are free, inexpensive and very expensive ....all of which work better than the two you're struggling with. VS5 is 2 years old, is buggy as hell, and is slower than the second-coming MyDVD is so badly coded that it isn't worth the plastic of the CD it came on, assuming it didn't come on floppies Good luck

  3. Which software do you suggest? I tried both Ulead and Adobe Premiere 6 but neither will work with my Adaptec capture card

Didn't your capture card come with a cap application besides MyDVD? Most do. If not, search this and other forums and use your capture card model number as the keyword. Try Yahoo too. As a last resort use MyDVD only to capture, then open the MPEG file with another authoring app. I do a lot of VHS-to-DVD transferring and I've had success over the last 2 years using Ulead DVD Movie Factory. It's simple and allows you to add menus, add chapter points if you so desire. I do straight transfers rarely adding anything ....just generate the files for burning. I have used it to make a DVD slideshow with mixed AVI mini-movies and JPG images, with background music too. It's nice, easy to use and cheap. Plus it's screaming fast and rock-solid. I know I sound like a Ulead salesman, but after 2 years of farting around with free apps like TMPGEnc and various full-bore apps like Scenarist, ReelDVD, Spruce-Up, DVD Workshop, etc., etc., DVDMF fits my needs exactly. Lately I've started using Womble MPEG Video Wizard 2003 for editing and really like it. Of course, I use Nero to actually burn the disc.

Put some feelers out in the DVD Authoring and the DVD Capturing topics here and you'll get lots of feedback as everybody thinks they've got the best combination of software ....and if they're happy, they're right

  5. Believe or not but my adaptec card came with MyDVD

I use MyDVD only to capture home VHS. I use TMPGENc and TMPGEnc DVD Authoring to edit and create menus. So far I tested Ulead Video Studio 5 and Adobe Premiere 6 (which does not support adaptec card). I contacted Adaptec and they said that the card works only with the bundled software. I guess that I need to spend time and hunt for a software that works with adaptec card.

Or get a newer capture card, finances permitting
