multiple avi's to DVD

I got avi films on my hard drive which are too big to burn as a vcd onto a 800mb CDr. how to I put more than one films onto a dvd, if anyone can tell me what steps and software I need for each step i will find the appropriate guides. the easier steps the better cause im a beginner to this kind of thing,

You didn't say what kind of AVI's but I would guess DIVX. You convert to MPG's with TMPGEnc or the like and author to DVD with a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author. in Author, you make menus to select the different videos.

How do I find out what type of avi's they are. does it make any difference what type of avi's they are?

Yes, it makes a lot of difference what kind of AVI's. DIVX and DV are both AVI's and a lot different. Use Gspot and AVIcodec to give you some information about the files. You can also use Virtualdub and it gives you information. If TMPGEnc will accept them, then encode them to VCD format with 48K audio. Look under 'What is' to the left, then under DVDR and you can find a link to DVD-VCD formats. When you put the files into Author, you can create a menu to be able to select each video. If the files are DIVX with AC3 audio, you have more work to do. The easy way is convert the AC3 to Mp2 audio.

Since you're going to DVD, you shuold leave it AC3 or WAV. MP2 is non-standard for DVD although many players and authoring software will accept it. Upsampling can make you sound crappy.........try soundforge i think it's best i don't know.
