Does anybody else have a Hauppage WinTV-PCI card based TV tuner card running in Windows XP?

I have tried using both WDM drivers on their website (wdm335_21125 and 3.37_211163 WHQL) and they both give me problems.

I have problems with the WinTV application freezing up on me (it freezes on top of other applications making the computer impossible to use). The picture will freeze sometimes and the worst part is I can't get the application to shut down (even with a kill attempt in task manager). Sometimes the picture does not freeze but the application will not shut down. Other applications don't freeze up like the Hauppage WinTV viewer, but they fail to give you a picture or will go into 320 by 240 mode or something not desirable.

I also have problems using virtualdub to capture using the WDM drivers, it will not go up to 640 by 480 resolution like the standard mode drivers would in Win9x/2k. Their website makes it seem like you can use the standard mode drivers in WinXP but when you try to install them you get a message saying you can only install the drivers in Win9x.

I don't think it's worth giving out a lot of my computer specs simply because I moved this TV tuner from another PC running WinXP and it did the same thing. The only common thing on the 2 computers is that I've got a Geforce ti4200 video card and the moved some hard drives over to the system.

The only credit I will give to the WDM drivers is that they will scale the picture in the WinTV program so that it covers my entire screen (ie. a resolution higher than 640 by 480). I would rather use standard mode drivers that do not crash and allow me to capture stuff though.

Anyone else using this card in WinXP with some words of wisdom for me?

Hmmm, I seem to have stumped some people.

    Anyone had any similar problems?

  3. I think your better off posting a little more info on your hardware specs, there are a number of different Hauppauge cards in the WinTV family, I'm currently using a WinTV model 401 with the 3.37_211163 WHQL drivers, I also have a MSI GeForce TI4200 8X (MB only supports 4X) using nVIDIA 53.03 drivers, this is on a VIA KT333 Shuttle AK35GT2 w/ XP1600, 512MB Kingston PC2100 DDR, WinXP Pro w/ all updates, no freezing or any other problems to report from mine, let me know if I can help any further....

Brewhah, just out of curiousity are you running Zonealarm? This is another potential source of my problems. I've got a router so it's not really required that I run Zonealarm, but I do it mostly out of interest to see when Uncle Bill's (Microsoft) programs want to access the internet and steal my info.

I believe my card is simply known as the WinTV Go and uses the 878 chipset. It isn't the one with FM radio or any other frills.

I've got an ASUS Geforce 4 Ti-4200 128 MB RAM (NVidia) video card, P4 2.8C with Micron PC3200 512MB dual DDR ram (this card also tested on 1 Ghz Celeron). WinXP with all critical updates and service packs, some of the meaningless recommended updates not installed.

I am running the NVIDIA 53.03 drivers as you are currently. I believe I have updated the drivers a couple of times and have seen this problem in previous versions.

  5. I also have the same WINTC PCI card that you do. I've also upgraded to XP PRo (mainly to get round the old Win 98 2gb file size limit). One I first started to use WINTV I had same problem with the 878 WDM drivers. I used the HCWCLEAR.exe file (http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/utils/hcwclear.exe) to get rid of all the previous drivers etc, than downloaded & installed the newest drivers & software. It seems to work fine now. But I can't cap in virtualDub - VD just seems to hang. Don't bother using the rec. facility on WINTV as it's worse than useless.

I've come to the conclusion that as this is a very old card it might not be up to the job anymore. I'm a newbie also, so it most probably thatI'm doing something wrong myself. SO I'm now looking for an alternative way to capture my VHS tapes & bur them onto DVD. I'm particularly interested in the Adeptec Video-OH series, It's fairly pricey, but looks like it'll do the job. Shame really as the WINTV card seems to be a good sturdy little card. You just need a good areial & not want to capture video.

If you do find a way to get the card capping let me know
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together! :)

  6. Hi, just to let you know. I've just bought a MSI N5600 Ultra video in/out 128mb graffics card. It works great! Even with the bundled software (intervideo WinDVD creator plus). No dropped frames no probs with audio sync either, only problem I've encountered so far is that I can only cap in black & white you can eaily connect your VHS via composite cable or S-Video you'll also need audio (left & right) cable to your computer's line in socket.

Install & setup was very easy & painless in XP. Will continue to find ways to get colour back into my captures, but if you or anyone else knows a solution, I'll be more than happy to hear
