  1. Hello everyone, first post here for me.

I just got my sony dru 510-a a couple of days ago. A fter installing it somehow i have lost my drag and drop ability and it tells me to insert a blank disc no matter what type or brand on both drives(the other one is a Litleon 4026us 52x48x52) , but when i open my software, clone dvd or Record Now dx it sees them and i am able to burn. As for the dvd i don't have any kind of compression software and was hoping someone could suggest a good and or easy one(the first disc i burned was too big and i could not get the last 40 minutes on it).
My next question is that the sony is running reallllly slow, 45 minutes to rip 40 minutes to burn and i read someware on ths forum about a drive speed selector program for sony?? called DSS 1.01 and was wondering if this will work for XP PRO or if there is any other work around for this cause it sounds to me im only running around 1x or maybe more as of now
    P.S
I just read you how to get a reply topic so i will be a little more exact
i tried using DLA then read to unstall it ...which i did ,worked with my ide set up, checked my master/ slave settings uninstalled various and possable conflicting software i think i mostly just got bogged down with information. Clone dvd works fine but a friend gave me his copy of dvd x copy and it will rip it but when i remove the master copy and try to burn it, it does nothing. I goto my computer and check it and the original dvd icon and information is still there even when i load a blank +/- r/rw in it.
The software is un regesterd so i know it's good. I know im long winded but i just want to be able to do it right or at least start off right. From there i think i will be able to figure out

    Thanks 1,000,000

  2. first of all, I don't believe dvd-burners are like cd-burners, where you can just drag and drop files onto the drive.
if you need to burn data files on to dvd's you need to use nero or some other software that allows you to burn data files onto dvd-+rw's.

    I have that same drive.
I used to try to rip with that drive, but it just doesn't read that fast. I use my normal dvd-rom drive to rip to the hd. I believe there is a patch you can download at the sony support website, but you have to complete a questionnaire to receive it.

as far as compression software goes, dvdshrink is probably the easiest to use and it's free. try that first.

For drag and drop (or something close to it) you need packet writing software. Nero won't do it, but Nero's INCD or Roxio's Easy CD Creator will work.

If you want to rip faster you're probably going to need a different DVD ROM. I've used the Sony 500 AX and it's locked at (I think) 2X for ripping. I'd guess the 510 is also locked. If you watch for sales you can pick up a DVD-ROM for $20 every few weeks at Best Buy or CompUSA. Or you can search and order one on the internet for not much more than $20 (you can also spend $40-$90 or more for a DVD ROM).

What mode are your IDEs running in?

If you put in a PCI Controller card then you can connect up to 4 more drives.

  8. Thanks for the pci info that's just what im gonna do so i can have my dvd plaer to rip . As for my IDE settings they are all on MAX UDMA but i have read different settings for different people and some of them say they are burning at 11x with some sort of stand alone drive speed selector program, but i'm not sure if that would be true or not... or even safe.

And by the way thanks for the input
Hpoefulllllly i will get up to speed fast

You might want to check eBay for a controller card. I bought one at Best Buy a few months ago and it was $40. I bought one last week on eBay for $21 (total including shipping). Here's links to a couple that are on there if you're interested:

I doubt that anyone is burning at 11X- there are no 11X disks. They may be ripping at 11X, but that's not usual if you have a 16X DVD ROM.
