A template.......sorry I dont know what that is....is it something I need to get or is it in the program...
thanks

Okay, it is the program. Templates are preset settings. Load the video as before, name the output file. Select Load. A list of files will appear. Choose the one which fits your project (DVD, VCD, SVCD, etc). Select OK and Start.

Ok , I opened TMPGenc, opened the xvid file and then went to load....I loaded the file DVD(NTSC).mcf template...when I went to the settings, under the video section , everything was grayed out so I cannot change anything. the settings are size 720 x 480 aspect rato 4.3 display and frame rate 29.97fps

If that does not work, try selecting Settings-->Extras-->unlock.mcf--OK. This should unlock the settings.

Ok , I got it to unlock......now what do I change the setting to....If I want to keep the same ratio (wide screen) as original.

You should check out some of the conversion guides over there on the left.
But in a nutshell, what you want to do is check the aspect ratio in GSpot. Assuming you have done that and it's widescreen and you want to keep it that way, select 16:9 display under Settings (bottom right hand corner) in TMPGEnc. -
This article should help you with determining aspect ratios and such:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/174200.php
That article will tell you that true widescreen is 16:9 = 1.7777, and anamorphic widescreen is 2:35:1. So if your original movie is one of those you should probably convert it to a 16:9 MPEG-2 file. -
Thanks I will check out the link....I think mine is the anamorphic widescreen.

Ok,I went into settings and clicked to encode widescreen....but when it finished it was still full screen kinda distorted....did I not set the right controls

When you do all that stuff in the guide, make sure that you set the Video Arrange Method to something with "keep aspect ratio". I always use Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2).
