  1. I have a "bad" asf file that I captured from a streamed video of the internet. It wont open in any editor. It does, however, play flawlesly in Windows media player.

I was wondering: would it be possible to "send" the asf stream to myself (of my hard disk) and just recapture the stream again (on my hard disk), but with a better program?

  2. TMPGEnc will usually open ASF files as well.

You can even try VirtualDub ASF?

If you still want to send the file to yourself the IP address should be:
    http://127.0.0.1/

  3. Yup, I did try asftools and TPMGenc and different versions of virtual dub. The file just wont open in them.

I wanted to cut off the beginning and end of it, but it woudnt work.

In asftools I had to use the "lost chunks" function to be able to load the file in windows movie maker. But the audio was then screwed up.

I managed to exctract the audio seperately, and import that into movie maker as well. I lined it up, but after exporting the file to WMV it was progressively out of sync - in the beginning all was OK, but as time passed the sync got worse - while sync was alright in movie maker.

Thats why I thought recapturing might be my best option.

BTW, it is so weird that windows media player has no problem with the asf file, while all editors I tried do. You would expect that if it plays, it can be edited as well.

Which URL should I insert in the capturing program? The one mentioned above with the corrct path to the file?

    Anyway, thanks for the advice.

  4. Have you tried opening it in Windows Media Encoder and selecting to re-encode the file?

  5. Yes, WME crashes just after it starts encoding.[/quote]
