I just converted a Divx into an Mpeg2 file, but the file is now a massive 2Gb in size, can I use nero and burn this as a normal DVD or SVCD disc to play in my stand alone DVD player?
Or do I need to split the file into smaller parts?

Yes, make sure the MPEG file is DVD compliant (check the DVDR article top left).

Before you just burn the MPEG2 onto a DVD and try to play it, make sure that your DVD player can play raw MPEG2 files. If it cannot, it must be authored first, creating your IFO/VOB/BUP files, and they must be in a VIDEO_TS folder.
