  1. Hi all,

I plan to upgrade my machine. I just bought an EPOX EP-8K7A+ and gona buy an AMD 226 FSB > 1GHz and overclock it. However, I went to TOM's hardware guide and saw the movie show that AMD could burn very easily!!!!!. That scare me!!!

I know your guys have AMD machines and some of you do overclock them. What is your cooling system:HEatsink and Fan? I don't want to spend too much money for it, my bugjet is only $30.

I'm gona use this new machine for VIDEO stuff, edit/encode. These take alot of time. My current machine is Celeron 566@850 run almost 7 days a weeks. I wish my new machine could do the same but faster with the good cooling system. Please post your cooling system here, I appreciate your help. Thankz advance.

  2. The Thunderbird chips can run much hotter than a P3 or P4. They are DESIGNED to run hotter. You need to be careful that the heatsink makes good contact with the chip and that the CPU fan is powerful enough to keep the chip from getting too hot. The more powerful fans can have a tight fit (or not fit at all) on some boards and they can be noisy. Visit the AMD home page and they have a list of approved fans, heatsinks, power supplies and cases. You also want to have at miminum two case fans. The front one should suck cool air in, while the back one should pull the hot air out of the case. Don't count the power supply fan.

I doubt you're going to get a "good" cooling system for $30.
At minimum you need a good heatsink, a good CPU fan and at least 2 case fans. The fans that come with most cases are junk and don't move enough air. A $50 dollar investment would be more realistic. The more you plan to overclock the hotter the CPU will get so the more important the heatsink and fans. Any CPU can burn up if you don't install it on the heatsink correctly. Don't overuse the heatsink grease either. A little thin layer is all you need.

There is a buisness online that sells all sorts of cooling devices.

    http://www.1coolpc.com

The preices are reasonable and shipping isn't tp bad either

That board is great! As you're a bit unsure, wouldn't you be better off spending the money on a faster processor and forget about overclocking it for now? You can always overclock later as time and knowledge permit.

    Regards..

    Hi,

I've just upgrade my computer to an amd k7 1400mhz
and i use an alpha PAL 8045 Heatsink which take an 80mm fan which bolts onto the motherboard if your motherboard has four holes around the socket which mean it wont come unattach as the heatsinks for these new athlons have quite abit of weight behind it and as the movie on tomshardware shows you don't want that heatsink to fall off.

I don't have a very powerful fan attached yet but hope to get one soon damn shame you can't get those delta 80mm fans in new zealand but my temperature is running 38 degress celcius just running windows and not doing much but when i put my cpu under pressure it runs at a maximum of 44 degress celcuis i use arctic silverII as my Thermal Compound.

It's quite expensive and probably what made me go over my budget but i definately want excellent cooling and since i saw that movie i knew i didn't want that heatsink to falloff
it also got good reviews on a few review sites.

I would also look at getting the fastest athlon since the prices between them except when you go upto the palaminos are not much be careful about those palaminos since they have numbers on them that are not actually the speed eg the Athlon Palamino XP1800+ runs at 1533mhz

  8. Hi, all

I have not bought the CPU yet, so your information is important to me. I should consider what is AMD I should buy. Overclock or get faster CPU instead. I have not followed AMD almost 2 years, since I have my Celeron 566@850 which is still great for me. I want to reduce the encode time with cce sp 2.5 which I get now is 0.21-0.33 (DVD to SVCD) I use CCE more than TMpeg since I always do SVCD. (Yes, TMPeg is the best for VCD). I know that CCE sp 2.62 support AMD athlon and Duron, but don't know about CCE sp2.5. Also, I don't know waht difference between Althon, TBird, MP, XP....

Well, It might take me a week. I spent a week for mothoer board, EPOX EP-8K7A+, and got a good price $75.00 (Refurbished for newegg.com).

Any advices and information from you are important for me.

    Thank-you everyone,

    Hi,

The AMD Athlon MP is Multiprocessing Power which you need a duel cpu motherboard which is very expensive and two athlon mp cpus

The AMD Athlon XP 1800+ is their latest cpu from AMD and your motherboard should support it.

I would go for the fastest processor now and don't overclock and maybe overclock later

here's a link to find out more about the athlon xp1800+
    h**p://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_756_3734,00.html

    Thanks TurboRunner

  10. you can check what system i have in my sig. I use the swiftech 462a HSF, costs about 65 bucks, and for a little more you can get the better Delta 80mm fan. It is louder though. This heatsink is huge, but it should fit on your board. Another good cooler is the Thermalrite Sk6.

I dont think i have the heatsink seated perfectly but im getting 34-35* C idle, and 38*C load.

About the AMD "burning easily", thats not true, the Tbird can run at outrageously high temps like 80*C+ but it will reduce the life of the chip drastically.

If i were you id buy the AthlonXP 1600 or 1700, they dont cost much and they run cooler then the Tbirds. You probably wont be o/cing those chips though because they're locked. I have heard that some of the 1600s are unlocked though.

    Swiftech 462a
    Shuttle AK31 rev 3.1

  11. Hi,
Thanks, I might buy a fastest AMD and just a good cooling, instead of paying too much money for a cooling system.

Does CCE sp 2.5 support Athlon ?
I want to make sure, I know 2.62 does...

    Thanks agian,

  15. Which ever heatsink you get, make sure it has atleast a 30cfm fan and a copper bottom as copper transfers heat better than aluminum. Also, make sure you use some kind of thermal compound on the cpu itself. (Just the core, not the whole cpu) It will help fill the voids in the bottom of the heatsink.

If your building the computer yourself, choose a case with a front intake fan and a rear exhaust fan to help keep the cpu cooler.
