Being a newbie I have been reading a lot of guides on this site to get the best results from my capture card (MSI/Nvidia Ti4200)
From this site I have come to the conclusion that the best Software to use is Virtual VCR, using the Huffyuv codec.
Unfortunatly I can't seem to select the Huffyuv codec. Not just in Virtual VCR but any capture software. It is definatly installed because I can see it and change the settings in controll panel.
From searching on this forum it seems that to use this codec you need to have the colour format set to YUY2 but I can't select that either. The only option I have is UYVY.
Another sugestion for a codec I have seen is MJPEG but when using this on the highest quality I get ghosting and jerkyness.
Does anyone know why I cant select YUY2 or use the Huffyuv or recomend another codec to use.
I am converting VHS to DVD so super high quality is not essential and I have Windows XP and about 80 GB of disc space, so file size is not an issue.
This is driving me mad!!![]()

Hi,
once I have seen the similar problems with eg. DVDx/VirtualDub and some Window OS versions. The problem was that the size of the drop-down box was improperly defined in size (something you can not change). But instead of using the mouse to open the drop-down box, try toogle between all possible codecs using the arrow-down & arrow-up keys.
If it is the same problem, the above should be a work-around.

Yeah I saw that on a previous post and have already tried that, didn't work though.
UYVY is definatly the only option I have. -
As an alternative, you might look at the Picvideo mjpeg codec...

Hi,
chosing RGB24, I still can select the Huyf codec in VirtualVCR. See attached image below (OS=WindowsXP Home).
Alternative: There is a new free lossless codec called Alparysoft Lossless Video Codec. You can try this (should be as god or better than good old Huyff).

I've tried Picvideo MJPEG, still very ghosty and jerky but not as bad as the Morgan MJPEG codec
I just tried installing Alparysoft Lossless Video Codec but as with the huffyuv codec it doesn't apear in my codec list.
You also mention choosing RGB24, but as I mentioned I can only select UYVY.
Earlier I tried capturing without any codec and it was perfect, but at 1GB per min, totaly unusable.
I also tried earlier using a couple of capture progs that encode straight to MPG. There is no jerkyness or ghosting, but the picture in general isnt as sharp and using other progs other than virtual VCR with the 're-sample audio' option set gives me audio sync problems (Audio slowly goes out of sync. The longer the video the worse it gets, this is something I havn't looked into!), so I would like to carry on using virtual VCR if pos. Is there an MPEG-2 codec I can use for V-VCR?

I'm not sure I follow what is wrong here. I have both VirtualVCR and Huffy codec installed on my system. I can run VirtualVCR and select either UYVY or YUY2 and select Huffy with no problems, and both captures good. Have you tried any other capture programs?

I'm not sure I follow what is wrong here.
I have tried other capture progs - virtualdub, and a couple of others I forget the names of and the same thing there. In fact Virtual dub only gave me the option of Divx or Xvid in capture mode.
Another bizarre thing I have just noticed with virtualdub is - origonally in the "set custom format" option It defaulted to UYVY 640 x 480 and if I tried to change to any other option it came back "Unsuported format"
Since I have been using virtual VCR, V-dub now defaults to UYVY 720 x 576 but I still can't change to any other format (not even back to 640 x 480)
I am begining to think that this may be some sort of pemissions problem with XP, even though I am logged on as administator. origonally to get the wdm capture drivers working in v-dub i had to change the permissions in the registry for them.
Maybe I need to do a similar thing for the Huffyuv codec? -
I've run searched and I can't find anything..... You may be right about permissions.
Good luck. -
Most people will tell you NOT to do this but in your case ... maybe download and install a CODEC PACK such as the ACE CODEC PACK
It might help install whatever-it-is you need to get things working.

Thanks, it now appears in my list.
All I got to do now is try it out. -

Yeah works a treat!! (at last)
Only tried it at 352 x 576 (PAL) so far, but thats good enough for transfering from Video (so I've read)
Hope you get it working there whoremoan (LOL great nick!)
