So I installed the latest huffyuv codec to see what the fuss was all about and it doesn't appear in my compression list.

I see nothing and I even set the custom format to YUY2.

    Any advice?

  2. 32bit or 64bit ? huffyuv ? what about vdub? everything has to match 32-bit for 32-bit, 64-bit for 64-bit

Ok, I'm an idiot and I'm glad the fix was that simple. I didn't even know there WAS a 64-bit version of huffyuv. But I downloaded that and the 64-bit vdub and it works perfectly. I'll never go back to Xvid again!

What makes you think Huffyuv and Xvid are the least bit comparable?

I wasn't comparing them. I was extolling the virtues of huffyuv. Also I hadn't heard of huffyuv before.

The "ffdshow codec" in VirtualDub has both Xvid and Huffy and a plethora of other delights.
I hate VHS. I always did.

At around 40GB per hour of HuffyUV....HuffyUV is more of an intermediate solution rather than a "final product" solution like Xvid or even MPEG2. Nobody is sharing HuffyUV files via the internet just like nobody is using Xvid compression out of an editor to be used in another editor.

I agree. Xvid, DivX, MPEG-2, H.264, WMV, and other similars, are designed to be deliverable formats, and certainly not in the same league as HuffYUV, which is meant to be an acquisition or intermediary format (depending) in a huge majority of cases.
