  1. I've searched the forum but got no answer (there isn't many on PPC and Divx). I have PocketDivx on my PocketPC but I've have nothing but problem when it comes to playing video on the pocket PC.

The video I encode plays just fine on my PC and I had them shrunk to 320x240 and rotated 90 degree so I could play them full screen. But when I play them on my PPC, I get garbled screen like a really bad encode or corrupted video.

If I use Divx 5 codec, the video is patially watchable but there are lots of garbage. When I encode with Divx 4, the picture is almost too bright (light grey) and I can see only a few green, blue, or pink squares flashing. No actual video is seen at all.

I have tried to make standard video for PPC's Media Player but a simple 2 hours video won't fit a 256MB card and I'm not spending $150+ for a 512MB version.

It is possible I have some issue with Divx 4 codec but they are not supported anymore so finding different version of Divx 4 won't be easy and I'm pretty sure PocketDivx doesn't quite support Divx 5.

For those of you who were able to make this work, can you tell me what version of Divx you used?

  2. I've had very good success with the following.

    For playback, use PocketMVP.

I used Divx 5 for encoding. Use VirtualDub to resize to 320x240, cut the frame rate in 1/2 (12 - 15 fps). Also set the audio to MP3.

I general target 50 kbps for the video in Divx and 3 kb/s for the audio. After this a 2 hour video is typically under 100 MB. 50 MB if in B/W (old sci-fi).

Not the greatest quality, but enough to get you thru a cross-country flight.

You can buy a cheap external battery unit that takes AA batteries for around $10 on eBay.

  4. Hey thanks! The video that didn't work with PocketDivx worked with PocketMVP. At least I know I converted and encoded properly the first time, it was the fault of an outdated program.
