  2. You can't realistically expect a low-resolution, low bitrate VCD to be "perfect" compared to a high-resolution, high bitrate DVD.

Having said that, I have backed up animated DVDs to VCD and they are virtually indistinguishable to my eye (not particularly fussy). A "live" DVD will always look worse - even to me.

Would I be right in guessing your downloaded VCD was animation?

Anyway, you can't go far wrong with the back-up guides on this site (to the left). TMPGEnc is free for MPEG1 (VCD), and on the highest quality setting is arguably as good as anything for VCD.

  3. well, yesterday I did my practice on how to put one whole movie in just 1 cdr.
I used SmartRipper, then DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc, the movie"IS GREAT" I play the cdr in my system which is in my room with a 13" tv and I won't ask for better quality,of course I can get a better quality but would take longer to convert the file to mpeg, you can choose VBR under TMPEGnc and will take longer and will get a better quality.

I use 1 small fraction of this guide, the part that teach how to fit one movie in 1 cdr, just from the TMPEGnc:

and the movie fit just fine, and I didn't use over-burn.
