Which format on DVD-R(W) is supported on DVD players?

I am in the process of buying a standalone DVD player so i checked here the DVD player compatibility report.

Ok, it says, for example, Sony ns400d supports CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW. Also says, the player supports VCD and XVCD which are formats used only for CD-R(W) media as I understood it.

But what format(s) will it play off DVD-R(W) media?
