  1. How to convert VCD and or SVCD audio back to editable formats? I need to create a DVD from several small VCD's (all windoze made).

I convert the .dat file from the VCDs to my desktop and change standard AVSEQ01.DAT to Whatever.mpg.

This allows me to view and listen no problems with all sorts of software apps. However Quicktime and every quicktme based app does not convert the audio at all.

I tried all presets in ffmpegX, however I can't get any audio files. Tried to uncheck the encode video box in the first tab, and in the audio tab I checked the encode audio, tried all available conversions but I usually get a Video conversion although I desable it and no sound.

    Any hints?

  2. You should use the "Demux" tool to extract the video and audio streams from the mpg file.

  3. To clarify my problem:
I need to convert the audio in the AVSEQ01.DAT (mpeg1) file which I find in a standard VCD.
Opening the Disck on the desktop I have several folders:
    CDI
    EXT
    MPEGAV
    SEGMENT
    VCD
the only meaningful file is the AVSEQ01.DAT file: i can see it in quicktime, and other programs. However if i choose demux in your program the program tells me the file is unrecgnized. If I copy it on my computer and change .dat to .mpg and attempt to demux it I get an error message as such:
Skipped -2 zeroes at start of file
mpgtx: AT EOF - please stop me!
mmm, this file does not start with a pack, offset: -2
use the desperate_mode switch as the first option -X to search for a header in the whole file!
if you want to force the operation. May yield to an endless loop if no valid header is found!
Does not even begin with a 00 00 01 xx sequence!
    /Users/man/Desktop/The rock/Final Films/Blook.mpg is not a valid mpeg file
What to do. I tried DIVA but it only returns the video part what to do next.

    Thanks

  4. Use VCDGearX to convert DAT to MPG then demux it.

Get hold of GNU vcdimager, as it has a simple commandline program called vcdrip which rips a VCD to an MPG file...

convert dat to mpg, then use ffmpeggui to convert to ac3, then use headac3he to convert ac3 to wav/mp3 or whatever you want..
