I would convert the videos to VCD Mpeg1. Then use TMPGenc DVD Author to build a DVD file with a menu for the various titles. TMPG will also convert the 44.1K audio to 48K DVD compatible audio.
I can fit at least three films on one DVD-R that way. -
First you need to convert your avi's to dvd compliant mpegs then author the files and burn. I use TMPGEnc to convert and TMPGEnc DVD Author to author and burn.
For DVD there is three basic resolutions: 352x240 (VCD), 352x480 (1/2 DVD) and 720x480 (DVD). For best results you should try to match your source AVI resolution when creating your mpegs. Which resolution you choose also affects the bitrate requirements of the video, and it's the bitrate which controls the number of minutes you can fit onto a DVD.
For VCD res at 1150 Kbps you can get about 7 hrs on a DVD, for 1/2 DVD you can get 5 hrs at 1800 Kbps, and full DVD 2 1/2 hrs at 3800 Kbps. These bitrates are for reference only and rely on the audio being 224 Kbps. You can choose to go higher or lower or use VBR (instead of CBR) to get lower averages.
Look in the Guides section for AVI to DVD using TMPGEnc and TMPGEnc DVD author, and there's a bitrate calculator in the Tools section.

Does this mean there is no need for SVCD2DVD, which is mentioned in the famous "Surefire" authoring guide? Because then I don't have to wait for this ridiculous licensing scam to go through.
I have a load of .avi TV caps, and they're great quality, all uniform and everything, which I want to put on a DVD (with menu, so I can select episodes from the menu, you know?) Will this TMPGEnc/ DVD Author combo do that for me? What are the drawbacks?
Thanks!<>< -
