  1. Hi

I just converted 3 hrs of old family 8mm cine to miniDV ready to edit to put on DVD but the film is really old and some of it is scratched.

Is there a filter/mask/algorithm that you can use to disguise the damage. I've heard of professional tools that can disguise scratches by looking at the previous and next frames.

    Can anybody suggest a program/filter/tool?

    Thanks

it would probably depend on how large the scratches are, and how frequent - if you look at some articles on improving image quality, one of the areas you can improve is video noise, where the software adds a slight blur or looks at adjacent pixels over time and decides that pixels x and y are the right color, and pixel z is intermittent noise, so it adjust pixel z to match x and y.

if the scratches are intermittent, something like that might help - but you might have to go through each frame with a program that can do rotoscoping (painting on video frames) and process each of them individually...

    Well,

if you still have got your clips as *.avi files (with a good MJPEG or DV codec) you can do some filtering with Virtuadub. Examples of filters
    to use are

    1) http://konstant.freeshell.org/ - a spot remover filter (se the example page)
    2) On http://neuron2.net/ there are other filters to try, eg. Smart Smoother Filter ro the Antiflicker Filter.

thats the problem....i've tried 'painting' individual frames but i think there's about 250 000 of them
