Okay, I'm trying to rip a DVD-R to harddrive. Only one problem, or should I say 7? According to DVDInfoPro this DVD has 7 read errors. It caused the following programs to error out and freeze, DVDDecrypter,DVDshrink,NeroRecode 2, and even Smartripper. (Tried in both file and ISO format.) The disc then just spins in my Pioneer drive. Is this the impossible backup? Or is they're a method or ripper out there that can rip even the most troublesome DVDs? Those sectors seem totally corrupted. The DVD plays with several one second freezes in two of my standalones

i like to use my liteon 163d to rip dvd's, because its fast as hell, but sometimes when a disc is really scratched up it will fail.. at that point i put it in my pioneer 106d and they almost always work..
my advice, try ripping with a different dvd reader -
Thanks for the suggestion Jeex. But I have no other DVD reader, on my computer. Just my Pioneer 105 and cdrw. I should have mentioned, they're are no scratches or visible defectects on the DVD-R, at all. The movie plays fine except for the one second freeze ups. It's an Optodisc brand disc.

probably the dvd(-/+)r has a bad burned sectors...I get that when i have a cheap media burned at 4X...

You don't need to "rip" your DVD-R at all. Just highlight all the files, and "drag-and-drop" them to where you want them.
If this fails, then your original burn was faulty, which it sounds like it was, since you report that it freezes now when it plays.ICBM target coordinates:

Yeah, it's a given that the original burn(NOT on my pioneer) was faulty. In my original post I noted that I believe several sectors have corrupted data. Guess they're's really no way to salvage this one, If the "drag and drop" suggestion by SLK doesn't work. I'll try it anyway. Thanks again.

Try iso buster and extract <image> to .iso
Just shut up and listen dumbass -
I tried ISO Buster. I was hopeful when it made it past the first 26%. But then it errored out because of the damaged sectors.

The only option is a different dvd player (assuming all sectors written were OK). Works here in most cases.

Um....with Drag & Drop....the DVD-Rom still has to "read" the disc. If the disc has errors...what difference is that going to make?
-
You can tell DVDdecrypter to ignore errors and it will continue.
If the error is not in a critical place , the DVD will still play.
I have one like that which plays fine in a player. It had 2 unreadable
sectors.
Another one stops at the bad place , but forward on the remote
continues it.
In drastic situations , the bad part could be removed and you could
re-author or even edit and re-encode. -
You won't notice 7 errors in the main movie, trust me my kids have some disks with 100's of errors. You probably have 10-20 read errors watching any given disk just from a standard player(not disk errors).
Follow Foo's advice, that method works very well.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
I'll try the "ignore option" on decrypter. Unfortunately, I believe that at least three-four of those read errors are probably quite critical. I don't how any other DVD reader(or Rom) would make a bit of difference, but if the decrypter option Foo mentions fails, I'll try ripping it from a friend's DVD-Rom. If I can just get the vobs on my harddrive, I'll re-encode. The suggestions were appreciated.

You must summon the DVD god Grishnewa, and give him a sacrifice of your DVD drive, then, he will grant you readability.
