is there a way to author an MPEG 2 file with 720p or 1080i?

In other words, will it be possible to record my HD Tivo content to disc and retan the HD quality? what pixel dimensions would be used? bitrate?

Or would no burning softwre allow a DVD to be authored with such an unorthodox file (yes, I do realize that these specs would be in severe violation of the DVD-Video standard.)

but is there any way to create this file and/or burn it and/or play it on some set top device?

btw - this is all theoretical, please no copyright advice, people.

well it is possable , but if you are just going to play the media on a pc -- better not plan to play it off a dvd disk -- though it depends on your system ..

    you can encode it as mpeg2 mp@HL 1280 x 720 p (24fps) @ 19.1mbps bit rate 1:1 pixel ratio , 16:9 aspect ratio

in just a short time though - you can buy a dvd player that truly plays hdtv (WMV9 format)

but when these HD DVD players do come out, will the bitrate ceiling allow for this high a bitrate, and will it be feasible to burn such a file to DVD-R?

    thanks for the knowledgable reply!

the players coming out in the near term only will play wmv9 HD --- different encoding ..

if the far off of some point - will be blu ray (in some form - sony already) .. they use the encoding i mentioned above for mpeg2 -- but they dont use a dvd-r disk .
