  1. I have been asked to copy a film onto DVD from VHS tape

Capture to pc via Adobe Prem Pro seems ok, however no picture on play back.
From everything gleaned from web/books macrovision is definitely
    the problem

Having spent hours chasing down every site/forum on this subject
it appears I'm no closer to getting a simple solution.

Why can't I find something like dvdshrink that works on vhs

Can anyone bring any light to how I achieve this..
remember living in a back-water like the UK means that electronic
gadets widgets or solutions may not have even been heard of at Harrods

Author it so you get a correct set of ifo files. Then use Smartripper to "rip" to a new directory on your HD. Smartripper should remove the macrovision protection as it "rips". Smartripper removes macrovision from DVD's,good chance it will on your files.

The only way is with your so-called "gadgets" or a vcr that disregards the Macrovision protection.

Remember, analog Macrovision is hidden in the invisible part of an image. The analog device which is "reading" it must be able to disregard it or correct it. Some VCRs do that. Most don't!

    Bye.

    Thanks wulf109

Ok so I'm nice but dim here

I capture the film into Prem Pro as an AVI then run Smartripper
    finally converting to MPEG2

If your card has a Brooktree chip in it you can get generic drivers
    that ignore Macrovision.

  6. Think this will do the trick.!
I have an old Hitachi VHS vm-1200e camcorder

This machine would not know macrovision if it fell over it,
this would allow me to do my friends vhs tapes onto dvd..

(like Donny Osmond in technicolor dreamcoat should be preserved )

problem is the a/v cable is missing, every avenue to replace it
has come to naught so far.
the connector has to have 8pins input and it looks a bit like s-video,
any help on were to get a replacment or how to get one made up would
    be appreciated.??

It's very unlikely that any VHS vcr/camcorder will eliminate macrovision.
Macrovision is encoded is the vertical interval bar between video frames it's always there. Unless you put a "black box" between your source and recorder you will get macrovision.

  10. Pirate1, read what FOO had to say. Don't waste your money if you don't have to. It's as simple as getting a generic driver.

Another solution that I've read about but never tried is to connect your video via an RF modulator.

    Here we go again:

As i said before, any device that reconstructs the VS area removes the Macrovision protection. There are VCRs that do that! But they are rare. Some cable boxes do that, etc..

Via an aerial cable is not going to work because the only thing that is happening is that you're modulating the signal into a carrier. The signal+analog artifacts is all there, with all the Macrovision.

Only one solution: blank the "noise" that is inserted by Macrovision. That's what the "black boxes" do as you know!

  13. Today i was very happy to receive a brand new, sealed copy of a VHS concert, just to find it won't copy to my philips dvdr75

Could anyone help me to find a suitable enhancer/cable that isn't very expensive in the UK? I will probably only need to use it once.

Cheers, any help is greatly appreciated.

  14. If your capture card uses the BT8x8 cipset, you can use the free GPL driver that wont detect macrovision. (ATI tv wonder uses this chipset, as does hauppage cards, and millions of other cards)

ATI All in wonder cards however, do not use this chipset.

    http://btwincap.sourceforge.net
then you needn't spend any cash.
