progressive scan problem

i have a 43" 4:3 hitachi HD ready TV that we bought about 2 1/2 years ago. we recently got a new sony dvd player to replace the ps2 as the dvd player. when i turn on progressive scan the movie plays for 5 seconds or so then the screen goes black for 5 seconds and the picture comes back. it does this the whole movie, but when i turn off the progressive scan the movie plays fine without going to black. we thought it was a defective dvd player so we returned it and got another model of the dvd player and the same thing happens when you turn on the progressive scan. so my guess is somethings wrong with the tv. any ideas or has anyone had this problem before? any help would be great

by the way, the dvd player is hooked up via component and digital coax cables

I have a simple answer for you. Unfortunatelly, it seems your TV is not progressive scan compatible. I think it's a new feature (1 year ago) and probably your TV doesn't have it.
