It could be possible the unit actually has poor support for ANY CD-R?

I know nothing specifically about it, but I do know you have to shop around for a unit that does all things with all media...

  3. I had a toshiba (can't remember the model) and it wouldn't play any brand cd-r. But it would play cd-rw perfectly regardless of brand.

So, you may want to try cd-rw. And if it works you can pick them up in bulk for cheap. They'll never be as cheap as cd-r but if they work it's worth it.
