  1. hello,

i was wondering what can cause a dvd burner rated at 4x with 4x media, to burn at 2x?

i've recently purchased 4x media for my dvd burner and it was working fine at that speed. i use various programs from roxio to dvd decrypter and they are all sex to burn at 4x. now when it comes to actual burn speed, it writes at 2x. any suggestions as to why this may be happening?

Brand name media or cheap media?

Also burner not recognizing the media burning code will cause it to burn at 2x instead of 4x.Firmware updates sometimes include more media codes.

  4. Crap media. Avoid firmware hacks or upgrades if at all possible. At least 1/3 of all problems reported on this forum result from crap media and/or firmware hacks/upgrades. (Another 50% of the reported problems result from use of VDub. The remaining problems boil down to lack of proper DirectShow audio or video filters.)

I would say media is the biggest factor but proper firmware upgrades are the way to go with the occasional screwed up firmware. If i didnt upgrade my 411s firmware then i wouldnt have been able to play dvd-r on my apex.I use virtualdub and dont have any problems using it,its always bad avi or mpg to be the fault for me.

  7. I have no trouble writing to Princo media either.

Getting the buggers to read past the 3.5 - 4Gb mark is another matter. Don't forget writing to the disc is only half the story - if the damn things won't read, they're coasters no matter what speed you wrote them at.

I would guess 2/3rds of the Princo media I have used have been iffy on the edge. Which is a shame, their type 8 CD-R's are the mutt's nuts and play properly in Sony DVD players...
