Pioneer 107 and DVD-RAM

Anyone have personal experience with using the Pioneer 107 and READING DVD-RAMs. I have a friend with a Samsung DVD Recorder and might want to copy/RIP data off of DVD-RAM to PC.

Any problems, caveats, etc?

I guess the goal would be for some recording off the Samsung to take data over to PC via DVD-RAM, edit, author and burn to DVDR/RW instead of using basic menus of Samsung DVD Recorder.

Well, the Samsung DVD recorder is actually an OEM model of the Panasonic DMR-E50 and your question about editing DVD-RAM discs on a computer has been asked and answered many times in this and DVD Recorders section.

I don't think Pioneer drives will read DVD-RAM. You'll have to get a separate DVD-ROM drive to read them. The link provided by Synergy lists some manufacturers that produce DVD-ROM drives that will read DVD-RAM.

According to specs the DVR-107 reads DVD-RAM

Yes, the DVR-107/A07 is supposed to read DVD-RAM. I don't own one (I just ordered an NEC drive), but I think it should be fine for reading your settop recorder RAM discs.

Eh, no it's certainly not.

The Pioneer doesn't write DVD-RAM.

Yes, Reads DVD-RAM only, does not Write DVD-RAM... And since at least for my friend, he would only be using is as erasable media to go from Recorder to PC or Recorder to PC to Blank DVDR, it serves it purpose well. Since everyone else he knows has only regular DVD Players, DVD-ROMs, DVD+-R media is the prefered media to use for FINAL product.

I was just pointing out that it differs from (and is not the same drive as) the LG mentioned above.

If I had a settop recorder (I've been eyeing the Panasonic E80H for a while), I would definitely pick up the Pioneer DVR-107 for exactly the purpose you're talking about. On the other hand, if your friend already has another burner that he's happy with, then I think DVD-ROM (read only) drives with -RAM reading capability can be found for $30-40. Do a search, I think there are some Panasonic and Toshiba models that fit the bill.

If he's in the market for a new burner the new Pioneer is a no-brainer.

No, right now his only "Burner" is the Samsung DVD Recorder (No hard drive). Great when recording off of HBO or stuff with no editing, but if want to edit out commercials for Network stuff or make fancier menus and still have final product be DVD+-R, then the 107 make a nice hardware addition for those options...

The disk tat comes with the 4040b (I have one of those too) has the ram driver on it. Install from there. And make sure the dvd ram service is set to autorun (ddont msconfig it out)
Then you can right click >format the ram same as a big floppy, with fat32 of ntfs. Pretty sweet. DVD-Ram don't require INCD or directcd to work.

Currently I'm not ussing myram driver, ive only 1 ramdisk and I like to keep unnecessary drivers loaded. So I just write and erase rw's for my backup needs.
