I saw an ad at Officemax for an 8x burner by KHypermedia.
It claims to be 8x +R (not both???), and it acts all confused (the ad, and their site) as to whether it does 8x write or 8x rewrite (i'm guessing it's 8x4x8, not 4x8x8!).
Also their site has NO firmware downloads, although it does let you log in as a "registered owner", so one would hope there is firmware there.
Does this drive totally suck donkey kong?

It is a Cyberdrive DX082D and you can get firmware upgrades from them. It is 8X +R 4X +RW 12X read. It is a + only drive, but it seems to do + very well for me. I did just buy it this past weekend so I have not tested a wide range different media. I did use some Imation 4X +r Ricoh's that wrote is 8:04, pretty quick! We also tried some HP 2.4X and Imation 2.4X and they worked fine also.

I believe some of the Khypermedia drives are Benq DW800A. I believe someone found out if it says made in Malaysia on the side its a Benq.
