  1. I have a moving video that I made with Windows Movie Maker with my Camcorder, and I absolutely have to blur out someone's face while they are moving. What program can I do this with? Maybe frame by frame I can do it manually, or an automatic program.

to find out what version you have, you can...

.... look at the box it came in.

.... look at the software disc.

.... go to Help-> About. it will list the version number.

then you can go HERE and get the basic concept on how to do it.

... which you would have found, if you had checked in the How To: Edit section at left....

On a part of the video that's moving or just on things like logos that don't move?

  8. I downloaded VirtualDub 1.5.10, and I get this error message when I try to open the WMV video. It says "Not supported: Microsoft owns US patent #6,041,345 on the ASF file format, preventing third-party applications from extracting data from ASF files. ASF file format support was removed as of V1.3d at the request of Microsoft and to avoid patent infringement claims, and as such VirtualDub no longer supports. Please do not ask for versions that do." How can I fix this?

You can't. The latest versions of VirtualDub won't do ASF or WMV files (unless you can find version 1.3c which will).

  10. I did manage to find VirtualDub 1.3c, and when I go to put the video in, I get this error: "ASF: illegal object fragment flags 0c in packet at b74 packet size = 1f40, pp=12, send time: 0.00" What does this one mean??

you need to convert from WMV to a format that Virtualdub can use.

check the guides in How To: Convert, at left.

After Effects costs $700... I'm pretty sure it came with some sort of manual. Have you looked in it at all?! Seriously, you're going to have to do a little digging on your own here. Either that, or next time just film her facing away from the camera.

There is (or was) some software called VGuise that worked very well. I haven't seen this software for some time, I believe it was new around 2000 or 2001. A friend of mine had it to block out faces and the result was acceptable but it took forever to render the video.

  15. I did not buy the software, it was owned by my work. They gave me a copy of it for editing our videos, but I was never instructed how to blur a face.

after effects is not a video editor per see .... so take it back if all you needed was a video editor ..

kinda a stupid company to buy a 700-900$ program for someone if you have no idea how to use it ...

    some goverment thing ?

if you search on google - there are 100's of tutorials on how to to use AE .. creativecow has a about 100 alone ...

its learning curve and cant be mastered in a day or a week (or a month) ... but its a very good program ... very popular...

you have me confused -- as what he wanted (besides blurring) was also to use AE to convert asf to a edit format

so you looked in the How To: Convert section, and looked through the list and you didn't see anything in that section about converting from ASF/WMV to AVI? using freeware tools?

I didn't know AfterEffects came with a Braille edition....

no one here is going to hold your hand and read the guides and manuals for you.

  23. Dumb/easy way of blurring something.
First: Turn your movie into an AVI file, it will be more compatible with AE.
In After Effects: Create a new composition. Import your movie, drop it into the timeline. Create a new solid layer, big enough to cover someone's face and put the layer on top of your video layer. Lower the opacity (just enough where you can sort of see the movie layer below it) of the layer under the "transform" setting of the layer. Add blur filter to that solid layer. Use keyframes to change the position of the solid layer (your blurred layer) so it stays over the face of the person.
These instructions are pretty basic (even though they may sound complicated). You'll have to do some research on your own or check the help file to figure out how to do some of the things I mentioned.
    Good luck

I gave him that link earlier, but he didn't bother to read it...

either that, or he can't apply concepts from one app to another, and you'll have to hand-hold him through the process. have fun... I'm going to go back HERE and look at the pancake bunny some more...
