I've had a Philips DVD recorder since February (had a DVDR880 until a couple months back when it stopped recording and I exchanged it for a DVDR75 instead). I'm trying to copy home-made DVDs, so no copy protection involved, using Nero 5.5.

I've just tried copying a disc over in a different way as suggested by someone in the Xbox newsgroup. I selected "DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO)" mode, copied all the files across from the source disc (which took forever - well, 40-50 mins) and it won't burn the DVD (it calls it a 'CD', but this seems to be a typo that never got translated to the DVD side of things), but although I'm copying from a DVD+RW 4.7Gb disc, there seems to be 9.4Gb of data to copy.

In the VIDEO_TS folder, as well as files VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_1.VOB - VTS_01_5.VOB (those being five 0.93Gb files), there's the same again but the "01" in each filename is "02".

The other files in this folder are: VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB and VIDEO_TS.BUP.

The other folder on the source disc is VIDEO_RM which includes VIDEO_MN.IFO, VIDEO_MN.DAT, VIDEO_RM.IFO, VIDEO_RM.DAT and VIDEO_RM.DAT

There's approx 4 hours of content on the disc, mainly in LP mode. Can anyone tell me which files am I able to discard, or how I can copy the whole lot across?

    Thanks in advance,

What about "Copy Entire Disc" ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Here's what I posted in a newsgroup about doing this:

Doing a straight copy in Nero Burning ROM 5.5 using "DVD copy", it came up with a read error (more below), and playing it in the following yields the following results:

    PC: Makes PowerDVD crash

Philips DVDR75: Just says "INFO" for each of the titles on the disc and
    doesn't play

Xbox: Fast-forwards through the selected title to the end, all in black. Can't
play it properly or see what I've recorded.

PS2: The menu comes up, as it does on the others, but won't play.

So, after knackering the first disc, it looks like this is the problem, as I
did a simulation test afterwards, but these two files are there - in the
VIDEO_TS folder. (The other folder is called VIDEO_RM)

17:46:49 Required file 'VIDEO_TS.IFO' is not present
17:46:49 Required file 'VIDEO_TS.BUP' is not present
17:46:49 DVD-Video files compliance test failed

I expected something to go wrong for the first disc, at least, but where
    exactly am I going wrong?

Hi, this is the first message I post here. Thanks to your question and Google, I found out that I didn't lost my mind. I bought a Medion DVDR at Aldi, and after I did the first DVD+rw I wanted to make a copy. I discovered the same things that you described, the RM folder and the crazy size (9+ GB), also double VOBs. They vary in size with the disk, somewhere between 585,000 KB and 765,000 KB (always the same size on the same disc (????) but I cannot believe what the computer is saying about the size, and it really doesn't matter). I can confirm that at least 3-4 other software for copying discs won't help at all.
So here is what I did.
With DVD decrypter in IFO mode I could identify the PGC files that went with my recording and I saved them individually on my harddrive. I was transferring some old VHS tapes, and I really liked the encoding done by the DVD recorder, so I just used TMPGENC DVD Author to create new menus but not reencode the files. I found out that I liked it better anyway because I didn't like the menu created by the Medion (probably you don't like the limits of your Philips either), also I could adjust the start and end of the recording, as well as the chapters. Then I just used TMPGENC DVD Author to save a DVD+R, and reused my DVD+rw. The only limit so far might be that the Medion encodes in AC3 and TMPGEnc Author doesn't let me preview the audio. Anyway another great benefit is that now I don't care at well what disc I use in the recorder, the movies don't have to be in order or anything, everything goes in the computer really easy and I order them there..
I hope it helps, I'm happy now, I'm going to keep that Medion, thanks to your question. Thank you.

2 minor additions to my previous message: My computer also calls the drive "CD" as soon as I insert the DVD+RW recorded on Medion/Philips. So it must be something about that RM folder. Also you should pick any line of VOBs, just don't do it twice.
