  3. Would you recommend these dvd-r's for video archival? I bought a couple and planned on converting my sister's vhs-c tapes to these dvd-r's

    I saw Sam's Club has Verbatum's inexpensively.

    They burn at 1X ....

Dont mess with computer while burning

Hope you dont have a flicker in Electricity ... computer might reboot.

    1X ... Takes longer than ... 2X or 4X to burn.

I have a UPS Power Supply ... so flickering Electricity problem has been solved for me.

    Archiving purposes ... no problem.

I use them to record TV shows ... Smallville ... etc ... etc.

No offense but you wouldn't catch me using them or the Verbatims you mentioned.

This media just isn't up to snuff. You may be ok but you run the risk of having your precious videos gradually turn into coasters over time...sometimes as little as a few weeks or months.

Do yourself a favour and get hold of some quality media. Those in the know on this board stick with the following:

    Maxell (My vote)
    Apple
Taiyo Yuden (also branded as Fuji)
    Ritek

DON"T DO IT, DON"T DO IT!!!! Just bought the 10 pack of DVD+R 2.4x. They are junk! Optodisk junk. Never tried this brand before but lets just say, if you like pixelation, audio freezes and pause, then by all means get them. Cheap-no good, cheap-no good.

VERBATIM dvd-r's are RICOH which are great discs. As for the FMI COMPUSA BRAND which are PRINCO they work fine on my PLEXTOR 708A and on my standalone dvd players. No problems at all! 8)

Not necessarily. You could get almost anything when buying Verbatim, including CMC, Prino etc. Checkout the DVD Media section to the left to see what I mean.

  13. Bought a 10 pack dvd-r and they are optodisk. Pixelations and freezes all over. Will not buy compusa discs again. They are not that cheap anyway. You can get ricoch under the memorex and imation brand for less than $1 a disc now aday. You might run into CMC but they are still better than the compusa discs. I have burned over 50 CMC discs so far without any problem but if I can help it, I'd rather get Ricoch.

I always see memorex dvd+r 4x 25 spindles (ricohs) at amazon for between $25-29. Just ordered a spndle today for $25.49 +4.99 shipping. Get em in a few days and very reliable media. Glad I only blew $8 to learn that lesson.

  15. I have a Panasonic DMR-HS2 and, based on various postings to this forum, have been using CompUSA 1X DVD-R almost exclusively. Haven't had a problem yet, but have only had the HS2 since last April so I suppose they could still turn into coasters. So far so good though.

Newegg.com just got another shipment of Ritek G04s in yesterday. At 49.99 for a spindle of 50 and free shipping you can't go wrong.
Life is too important to take seriously.

I agree with you 100%. I don't know why some insist in finding cheap media. You always get what you pay for.

You did forget one from your list, MITSUI and you could throw in ProDisc (I think there is some affiliation with Mitsubishi) as well.

  20. I bought a 10 pack of Compusa -R a while back for $8. They are Princos which burned at 2X. 10 for 10 no problems on an Iomega burner. (rebadged nec)

Got 40 myself a while back, mostly used for data backup though. All have burned fine at 2x on my A05 with hacked 2x firmware. But this was an older pack think it was LeadData not sure if that's same as FMI etc. What I got works great on the Pioneer is all I can say, and they were $1 back a few months ago when most others were $2. Get a pack and try them out, it's only $8 to see if they work well for you.

Course at $1 each you should hunt for a 4x sale. Do without a week and wait till the next round of adds..

    Wow

I just got back from school ... I've got another class in 4 some hours.

Lots of feed back in this thread. Well guys ... I bought 4 Packs of 10.

I like these disks ... I do hope that they do not deteriorate over time.

That would be a bummer. I would lose my TV Shows.

Well by then ... the next 2nd Season of Smallville will be on sale by then.

My October birthday present from my girlfriend was Season 1 of Smallville.

I have used the Compusa disks for almost a year now. I just checked the first disk I burnt and it plays as good as it did the day I burnt it. I have the Pioneer A05 with the hacked firmware and have burnt problem 50 or 60 of them.

  24. I purchased CompUSA disks a while ago (10-pk). My Optorite DD0203 burned all of them without a single coaster, by the playback... Pixilation, freezing - unbelievable.

I thought that the problem was my burner, so I made the same mistake and purchased more CompUSA disks after upgrading my DVD burner's firmware - same problem.

I can't believe how such large retail store can sell that junk. How long they will be selling it? I hear complaints about the quality of CompUSA DVD media all the time.

I would never buy cheap media, especially for archiving (video or data). I would stick with more expensive brands that eventually cost less, because all my CompUSA disks went to the trash can. My favorite ones are TDK and Fujifilm.

By the way, the CompUSA disks that I had trouble with were made by Optodisk. The only way to check is to use DVDInfoPro. Otherwise, according to CompUSA, they are all made by FMI.

LOL! I don't use the DVD MEDIA SECTION because in my experience I've found nowdays any brand of DVD MEDIA you purchase could be CMC, PRINCO, etc. I purchase my DVD MEDIA locally because if they don't work well I am able to return them and get a refund. So your statement that you wouldn't use VERBATIMS is fine. To each's own. What I should've said was the VERBATIMS I purchased were RICOH. I wouldn't keep any VERBATIMS if I found out through DVDINFO PRO that they're CMC. As for the PRINCO COMPUSA FMI brand they work for me. I've heard how the PRINCO is crappy media and they won't last long. Well do we actually know how long these DVD MEDIA will last? Nope because this is so brand new. Another forum site said PRINCO don't last a year. Well I've purchased a dvd movie from ebay last year and it was made w/ PRINCO. Ummmm it still works fine in my standalone dvd players and on my dvdroms. Go Figure eh!

This thread just goes to show how much variation there is out there. My advice is to find something that works for you and stick with it. I've got my Ritek G04's coming and I'm happy

  28. Unfortunately there are so many variables in DVD media. Memorex made by Mitsubishi Chemical, CompUSA made by Optodisk, Fujifilm made by Ricoh, TDK made by Ritek, etc. Even Ritek G04's can be crappy because it turns out they make Grade A, Grade B, etc. media. Grade A goes to TDK or Fujifilm, Grade B and lower goes to somewhere else. I wish the DVD media package shows who the original manufacturer is.

I have TDK 2X DVD-R 25-pk spindle with disks originally made by TDK (according to DVDInfoPro). Does TDK even make its own DVD disks? If so, why they get media from Ricoh and Ritek and sell as TDK in most cases?

  29. I came across these, 10 for $7.99:

    2.4x DVD+R Media, 120 Minute / 4.7GB, 10 Pack

    What's the word on FMI?

    Thanks...
    Quote Quote
  30. Okay, here's my story. As I read a few months back on this forum, there was clear explanation of which Compusa DVD-R's to buy based on packaging. I have yet to find that thread, but it did depend on the packaging. The soft wrapper packaging were made by the better company (I believe that would be Princo), the ones with hard plastic wrapper packaging were made from the other no good cheap brand (I believe Optodisk).

All I know is I went with what they said and bought about 10 packs of 10. I was going to be selling them with a video of an event. I sold 80 DVD-R's and so far have not had a call back with any problems. This was back in November and am still making copies for some people.

Hope this helps clear up the mess about them being good or bad. I believe some are good some are bad depending on who made them. Check the packaging before you buy.
