hello
i got a LG GSA 4040B and today i bought some dvdr that can handle 4x speed
but when i´m about to burn it , it only shows 2x speed
anybody knows how to fix this?
PS : the dvds are really 4x speed , a friend of mine bought the same pack of 25 as me and can burn them at that speed and i already burned a dvd at 4x

Make sure your firmware is A302, and use Princo DVD-R or Ritek blanks.
Burnt over 60 princo's at 4X without a dud!.
If you expect to find that all blank DVD's are the same, you will be disappointed. -
i got A302
damn my dvds are from MDA not those u said , does this means i can only burn them at 2x -
If it's not burning at 4X for you, there is something you're doing wrong. I can assure you the 4040B does burn at 4X very reliably. I do it all the time (and my firmware revision is A300, so yours should be at least as good).
This drive is very picky about writing to cheap media. I use only Maxell and Memorex (+r and -R) and I burn with Nero 6. No problems burning at 4X. -
I think your media has to be rated at 4x
I bought some that says up to 4X but it is riteck03, and I cant get above 2x with it. I have read that i will need ritek O4 to make it work. I dont have a local source that I can get printco (that I know of).
Your not alone, but the issue is probably a media issue.

2 things:
1: By "printco" do you mean "princo" ?
2:This drive is very picky about writing to cheap media.I use only Maxell and Memorex (+r and -R)-Yar, matey!- -

One played fine and the other one froze in my Panasonic DVD player & toshiba dvd-rom. For me it was enough reason to give it back and get Pioneer A06. Eversince I have burnt around 20 dvd-r/rw's(pine, no name generic, verbatim, ritek G04), played just fine on my DVD player and my friends X-box.

@Kingnog:
True, Memorex is cheap, but it works very well for me. Perhaps I should have said "the drive is very picky about no-name media". I have to stress that the only Memorex that works for me is +/- R. The Memorex RW disks are useless pieces of crap.
@Just_One:
Maybe you already know this, but let me point out that it's improtant that you set the drive to DMA transfer, and also install it as the Master drive on the IDE channel. Good luck! -

Sorry typo, Princo is correct, find a brand that works for you and stick with it!. -

hmmm....i can't seem to burn on maxell or memorex dvd+r at 2x and 4x and i have the A302 firmware. but it has no problems buring on memorex -r at 2x and sony dvd-r on 4x

I have my gsa-4040b on cable select, and it auto-sets to slave...it seems to be working fine. Is there an advantage to setting it on master? I have a dvd-rom drive on master.

The only advantage, or convenience rather, of setting your 4040 as a master on second IDE is that you will not have to change it when you decide to flash its firmware in the (near) future, as per LG's flash proggie requirements
I have mine as slave on primary, and other one as slave on secondary IDE, they all work fine without any problems.
Most important is enabling UDMA, otherwise you'll be bitching that it eats up your resources (as someone did earlier lol).
Also important is to keep *reader* and *writer* on separate IDE channels as well if you want to be able to copy discs on the fly.
The same goes for 2 writers on 1 system if you want to be able to burn 2 copies at once on both of them, they have to be on separate IDE channels. -
