I have an LG GSA-H22N DVD writer that habitually misidentifies rewritable DVD and CD media as pressed disks. When a RW disk is loaded, media information utilities return the media type as DVD-ROM and burning apps won't touch the disks. Updating the firmware did not help.
Any suggestions other than buying a new drive?
(It's under warranty, but it'd probably cost me more to pack and ship it than to buy another drive.)

If it can't properly read the disc info, then it sounds like a hardware (likely laser) issue. If it's in a dusty/smoky invironment, you may want to try cleaning it.
