Are there any programs that will tell you if a DVD has macrovision?
I was playing Jason V/S Freddy and I did a test record to an SVHS vcr and to my surprise here were no macrovision effects. I find it hard to believe a new Hollywood release would not have macrovision, even a "B" movie like this.

  2. DVD Decrypter will tell you.. Once opened, it will be displayed toward top-left corner under the drive drop-down selector..

  3. Apparently more and more DVD's are being released without Macrovision. It seems some of the Studio exec view the Macrovision Licence fee as a waste of Money!

I believe the Region 2 Harry Potter movies were released with no MV

Same with CSS licensing fees. Why should I pay a yearly fee + a per disc fee for protection that doesn't work? Kind of like buying condoms with the tips cut off!

Who knows, maybe there were too many people that kept returning too many discs that were "defective" when all they really did was run the dvd player through the VCR..

I guess they figure people like the quality of DVD and if they were just going to record it on their VCR, they'd probably just get the pay per view version and do that anyway

DVD Decrypter does not tell you if the DVD has macrovision. It does diplay whether there Region/RCE or digital copy protection, but not macrovision.

Does anyone know of a program that detects macrovision on a DVD?

This is my way of checking to see if macrovision exists.

    1. Open movie Titleset VOB, in question, on your DVD in VobEdit.

    2. In the left window, click on any Navigation Pack. They're the ones with no icons associated with them.

    3. Look in right window and go to Byte [0031], you'll see Macrovision (APS). If you have a value other than zero, then yes...you have macrovision.

    4. Check other Nav packs and VOBs if you wish to further confirmation.
