I know this recorder is supposedly equipped with firewire... What exactly is it?? and what is it's purpose??

It transfers both video and audio together on one cable in digital form, so there should be no quality loss as with analog connections. Theoretically, anyway. In many real world cases however, I see little difference between a firewire and s-video cable, so it's no great loss without firewire.

The 60 and 100 both have the firewire connection, not the 80, unfortunately (I have the 80). The firewire is used to connect your DV camera to the DVD recorder so you can transfer your home movies from DV to recorder's hard drive and then to DVD.

If your Digital cam has analog output (which it should) then just use that with your DMR-E80 and don't worry about it (the DMR-E80) not having FIREWIRE.
I've seen enough tests that show little difference when you record analog out VS firewire out when you are encoding direct to MPEG-2
So it's no big deal.
