I am having problems with very blocky artifacts on divx conversions of VHS captures. I capture at 480x480 and then convert using Virtualdub. I use the VHS and Smart smoother filters. I convert to Divx 5.05 using the Home Theater setting. This setting gives me excellent results on DVD conversions. However, my divx encodes of VHS have large, blocky artifacts on anything that moves even slightly. I have tried upping the bitrate to 1285 from 780 (the default home theater profile setting), but with no appreciable improvement. VCD conversions look better than my divx stuff, which makes no sense.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any solutions or ideas are much appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Do two pass variable bitrate. Check your bits per pixel and use your first pass to see if its sufficiant. If not lower the res or up the bitrate.
