  1. I have two questions.

    1. Is there a way to capture VCR without a TV or Video in card. I seem to remember reading something about a piece of hardware that you plug you VCR into and then connect to your computer via USB.

    2. What is the best way to capture VHS to put it on a DVD using the above method if possible. All the guides I have read relate to using a TV card of some kind.

Any help would be great as well as the name of this hardware I mentioned.

  2. go to the capture card section in the l/h column... tick the card type and/or connection type category you are interested in and browse the search results
    Always check helpfiles/instructions before leaping...

  3. One thing to add:

Some of my tapes are NTSC and some are PAL. I will be using a PAL VCR that allows playing of NTSC tapes. Will this determine the type of capture device I need to use.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    dumpy,
There is a lot of good hardware out there with a USB interface. The newer stuff is USB2 which is needed for reliable captures above about 6500 Kbps (like capping off cable or DSS), and USB1.1 which is OK for anything up to about 6500 (like VHS).

Plextor PX-M402U is an excellent USB 2.0 capture device for this purpose.
I got one last week and am very happy with the quality.

That unit has a nice feature set, and only $150. Do you know which chipset it uses?

I am not sure what chipset they use. Perhaps one day I take it apart and check it out.
The MPEG2 capture is comparable if not better than MPEG2 rendered by CCE or TMPGenc from ADVC100. It is certainly a time saver capture.
