With the help of the Capture forum, I have captured and produced DVD-r's with some old TV shows. They were captured in MPEG-2 and burned without the need to render. They all play on my computer but they will not play on my standalone DVD player. It just says: "reading......." and finally asks for a compatible disc. I have tried 3 different brands of DVD-r.
They do play on my Playstation 2.
Facts:
Win 98SE
Burner: LiteOn LDW-411s with FSOF firmware
DVD spec: 1/2 D1 (352x480), VBR 4500, Field B, mpa audio
Software: Ulead Video studio 7
DVD Player: Pansonic (which states on its face that it reads DVD-r)
DVD file size: recorded discs are 3.8Gb-3.9Gb
The obvious culprits are either media compatibility or my standalone is extremely finicky.
Any other reasons that you can think of?
Thx, Larry

D any other dvd-r's you burn work on this player? Maybe it doesnt suport dvd-r at all.

These dvd-r's are actually the result of my first project (just got the burner). You may be right but there is a sticker right on the front touting its ability to read dvd'rs (it is one of the reasons that I bought it). I did try some D1 spec DVD'rs out before settling on the 1/2 D1 spec and they did not play either.
Maybe I need to go to Best Buy and try other players out, too.
Could there be something about the burner? or the capture/burn specs that I am using? -
What software are you using to burn the DVD? I could not get my Panasonic to work with Nero, but had good results with InstantCD+DVD. I think it was a Joliet or UDF version issue. You want to make sure Joliet is off and the UDF version is 1.02.
You may be having a different problem all together, but it is something to look at.
Also my panasonic did a terrible job of decoding 1/2 D1 movies. The same movie looked excellent on my JVC. So maybe you are better off looking at different stand alone players? -
Media!
I got spoiled on my APEX, it plays everything. However, my optorite is very finicky about media. It only reads the first 3Gb or TDK 2x's (it loves RITEK G04's!). I won't even try cheap media, it's not worth the frustration. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
If your burning the mpg's direct to disk without authoring you need to be aware that many DVD players cannot play raw mpg's. you need to author the mpg's as DVD files and they will play on any DVD player.

Well....
The captured mpg files are authored but not rendered.
The comment about Panasonics proves true. I went to Circuit City and tried 4 different CD players... Sony, Zenith, Panansonic and JVC. I tested each of them with the 3 different media brands ...PC Club 4x (Ritek G04), Kypermedia 4x (CMC) and Imatian (Ritek 2x). All played great on all machines except that none of them played on the Panasonic!!
There we have it!! Stay away from Panasonic.
On the comment about the authoring of Joliet vs UDF. I am not given a choice in the program (I don't think). One thing I did find out about Ulead VS 7 is that there is a checkbox giving permission to not render DVD compliant files. I found out that if you take an ongoing project to the authoring routine, it will render no matter what. But if you start a new project, go right to authoring and add the mpg files at that point, the rendering of DVD complaint files is bypassed.
Things are looking up. Thanks!!! I am still looking at getting my ATI MMC running (conexc.dll IPF). I may try to capture with that and then author with Ulead VS7. Thanks again!! LarryB
