I am thinking of changing my dvd rom (pioneer117) to get better, faster ripping speeds. I use dvd shrink and Nero with no problems on winxp.
What make do you recommend for best results.![]()

I just bought a plextor 116 and I love it. Not really that much faster than a 117 though. audio ripping is 24-32x. dvds don't get much faster than a 117 in my experience.
...as a side point, go into professional recording studios and you'll see them using plextor drives. they are very high quality and worth the extra $$$. As a case in point, I have a plextor CDr (2x) from 1996 that still works -- although I don't do a whole lot with ithttp://encoding.n3.net <-- for all your DVD and CD backup needs! -
Plextor's are built like a tank. You can get one cheaper if you buy one that's rebadged by another company. I'm not sure who all does that though. My Lite-on DVD-ROM rips DVD's at around 4-6X.

I think "best" is in the eye of the beholder. I'm currently using a Samsung drive to rip my DVDs.
Single layer: about 8x-10x
Dual layer: about 5x-7x -
Plextor no longer makes much of their own stuff, at least not at the consumer level.
But, a Plextor-badged NEC1100A, for example my 504, is nicer than its generic counterpart. The full-speed extracting doesn't hurt.

For DVD-ROMs, pretty much it's a level playing field between Lite-on's 166 and Pioneer's latest.
