  1. I'm just curious, is everyeone able to watch their burned and/or ripped dvd movies?

I have a Sony DRU 500A and I use to have no problems. I bought the cheap 1x media from CompUSA and burned movies from DVD XCopy, Xcopy Xpress and DVD Shrink 2.3 and also from my digital video camera.

Now when I rip a dvd or burn something recorded from the tv/satellite, the burned dvd will either play a little while and then start freezing up or stop playing altogether. I thought ok, maybe it's the media. So I bought some 4x Verbatim dvd's...basically the same thing. Ok, next I think it's the Sony burner...I buy a new Plextor PX-708A, I rip a dvd using DVD XCopy Xpress and my home Sony dvd play will not even show a dvd in it. I put it in the pc and same thing.

So, bottom line...I really want to know can anyone really watch any of the dvd's they are ripping/burning...if so..then what are you using to burn them with and what are you viewing them on?

I'm getting really frustrated with this

    Thanks!

Your problem is the media you are using. I can watch all my Ritek burns perfectly. Stay away from Compusa and the other super cheap medias, they are usually CMC or Princo and just not that good.

Go pick up a pack of apple 2x or 4x, or if your a +R guy Fuji 4x and try them. Just get a small pack and try, I bet you'll see a HUGE difference.

  3. It could be your settop DVD player that is causing the problem.. Is it DVD-R compatible?? Some older DVD players cannot play DVD-R's..

I sure hope most of us can watch the result of our investment.

Be funny if everybody was just saying, "Oh, yeah, it's working.".

I've only had 1 problem with 1 movie on 1 CompUSA -R. Reburned the same to Philips +R and was abolutely perfect, 3 hour movie, indistinguishable from the pressed disk.

This with a LiteOn 411S, flashed to FSOF. Love it. Have to get anothsr for this machine.

    Cheers,

Zero problems on 4 different players with my RITEKs. However, my TDK 2x's don't like 2 of my players (stutters and skipping). DVD Infopro says the disks are 100% good, and they play fine on 2 players but not 2 others.

So, like I've said before, 98% of the time it's media.

    Princo's always suck :P

are you only having problems with captured tv & satellite burns, or are you now having problems with rips and shrinks as well?

if you can still rip a commercial dvd and burn it, but your captured material isn't working, I would think it's a problem with the authoring stage - how are you getting the material from tv/satellite onto the discs?

  8. I burn all my Maxell/Memorex DVD+Rs on my LG 4040B and play them on either Panasonic RP82, Sony DVD Player (Can remember model #) and Pioneer DV414. I played some numerous times without a hitch. I have two coasters cause of my own mistake. DVD+RW's also work perfectly. I use DVD Decryptor (when needed), DVD Shrink and Nero 6019 to burn.

  9. Well, here's another one for you. I just bought a new Plextor PX-708a burner and I've used dvd xcopy xpress 3.0.2 on Verbatim 4x media and none of my dvd players will even show a disc in it. The pc's will not play them either.

One of my Sony home dvd players is the model (would have to go get the exact model) that supports -r and +r burned disc. That unit did die on my and had to send it to Sony for warranty repairs.

I'm basically having problems with all of my burned dvd stuff seems like...rips, shrinks...etc.

With the exception of Princo's, never met a DVD-R/RW that wouldn't play (4 different players)
In 8 months I have tons of DVD-R's from captures, that all make me proud

I can play everything I've ever burnt on my settop and computer DVD drives.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  14. I tried CompUSA both CD-R and DVD-R once, never again. Most got burn errors, those that didn't wouldn't play.

  15. I have the Sony DRU500A also. I have burnt countless discs using el cheapo 1x Princo DVD-RW, Maxell DVD-RW, Ricoh DVD+RW (2.4X) and Digital Matrix DVD+R (4X) and all have burnt fine using a variety of programs from Nero, DVD MF, DVD MF2, Tmpgenc DVD Author and can play on all my DVD players and most of my DVD-ROM drives. So far I have had to only trash on disc - one of the Princo's

I've got the Plextor 708A and have used the cheap COMPUSA PRINCO DVD-R 1x discs with no problems. They play in all of my stand alone dvd players, APEX 1500, LENOXX 2003, RCA 220, INITIAL 2590 and have played in other friends one's as well such as PANASONIC & SONY. They're 1x speed but burn at 2x. I use DVD SHRINK, NERO 5.5.10.42, IMG BURN TOOL, & DVD DECRYPTER. I've used IMATION 4X DVD+R that burns at 8X, VERBATIM 2X DVD-R & RITEK 4X DVD-R that was bought from PC CLUB listed as generic for $19.99 for a 25 pack spindle.

In their defense, the CompUSA DVD-R's I've gotten were LeadData. They've been great, work well at 2X in my Pioneer A05 drive. YMMV wildly if you get other discs in their house label of course..

I use Maxell x2 for my standalone Samsung S221 with no problems. This machine would not play Optodisc -R's whatsoever.

99% of all playback problems are due to media. Stick to the top brands and you'll be golden:

Tayo Yuiden (AKA Fuji MADE IN JAPAN)
    Ritek
    Maxell
    Apple brand (Pioneer I think)

See http://www.lordsmurf.com for a must read media guide.

I found that brand-name DVD players can be picky as to what they'll play. I've never had a problem with my cheap Apex or Norcent players, but friends with Sony or Toshiba players are not that lucky.

  20. It might be worth your time to take a couple of your burned disc to Best Buy and put them in a few DVD players to see if they play. That way you can tell if its the media or the player. Just a thought.

  21. darkcyber,

As someone who does DVD conversions, I can tell you that what you are seeing is a media issue. While some DVD players will play virtually ANY DVD-R disk great no matter what media is used, some, like the Apex units are VERY picky on what works with it. I test out all burns of 4 different DVD players. 2 Apex, a Sanyo, and a Pioneer. Disks that play fine on the Sanyo and Pioneer, choke on both of the Apex. DVD-RW plays fine on all, but I have only certain disks I use when I want to assure playback on all DVD players.

Whenever one of my DVD's is skipping, I take it out and look. 100% of the time it's a TDK 2x I got by mistake instead of my usual RITEK G04's. I won't even consider buying unbranded media from anyone, it just doesn't work worth a dam in settop players.

  23. There's been enough different DVD players pass through my house that I could've opened an electronics showroom. We are currently living nicely with an Apex AD-1100W and a Sony unit whose number I can never remember to save my life (but it's posted in my profile). I use name-brand/major-brand media and burn at low speeds (DVDs at 1X or 2.4X, CDs at 12X) and don't have media issues.

I also put Premium Unleaded gasoline in my vehicles, wash the towels in hot water instead of cold water, and wrote an Excel spreadsheet to track my CD/DVD recording habits to identify what works and what doesn't.

On the other hand, my neighbor uses only Princo and unbranded media at the fastest speed possible, siphons gasoline from junkyard cars to fill his vehicles, sprays Febreze on his towels rather than washing them, and labels his media with strips of 2" masking tape.

His discs play fine in my machines, too. Go figure.

  24. not really, because someone ushally loans it out before I get the chance to watch it! But ushally my compadibilty is about 90% with all players and about 99.9% with all my norm loaners rarly ever a problem, unless im using some crap media, but I have not had to buy crap media for 6 months now since prices are so low for good media. So unless i make a boo boo my method seems to be fool proof.

I does sound like you are having media issues. The only advise I can give on that is to buy some RitekG04 media. I have never had media issues, since early on...right after I bought my burner someone told me to buy Ritek and I wouldn't have media issues...I did and I haven't.

Now those work for me, I have a Pioneer DVR-105, I always burn at 4x and I try to burn them right out to the edge, having once burned a 4,669,432,528 byte image and found out it would fit and work. But I ALWAYS burn from a ISO or image file. I'm not saying they will work for you but I do know this:

In addition to backing up my DVD's, I do original video work. I make wedding DVD's, sports highlight videos and such and I have over 1000 DVD's sold and being played by 1000 different people. I always send a business card with each DVD sold with my phone numbers and email addresses on it and I have never had anyone ever call, email or return a DVD because it wouldn't play.

So to me, RitekG04 media is the #1 media and I won't buy anything else.

DVD burning is just like anything else the best way is the way that works for you. But if I had to bet money on it, I would bet changing media will fix your problem.

Do like "Spruce" said, take a disc down to best buy and just start putting it in...don't ask them, they won't let you, just do it...that's what I did. I checked the cheapest DVD player they had then checked the most expensive first so when they told me to leave I would have already checked the high end DVD player.

Not that I have checked this out or anything, but I think system setup, OS, and programs used has a great deal to do with DVD burning and compatibility. There's just no other way to explain why 2 guys using identical burners and identical stand alones and identical media get exactly opposite results. The only differences are progs used, and system specifics like MoBo, processor, ram, etc.

What kind of horseshit customer service policy is that?!

I never had issues like that when shopping at Ultimate Electronics. They encourage people to interact with the technology.

I had many reasons for not shopping at Best Buy before, but that ranks numero uno on my list now.

You know that's what I thought. It wasn't like I was playing a Jenna Jamison highlight DVD or something. It was shrek.

The one guy (employee) thought it was pretty neat as DVD backing up was still fairly new to most but when the manager came by he didn't think it was neat and he was pretty upset about it.

I tried to be nice to the manager guy and explain WHY I was doing it but he didn't care.

That's OK, I've been kicked of nicer places than Best Buy.

I also do not buy anything at Best Buy anymore. I would buy Xbox or PS2 games there and a few other non-technical things but now I just go in and play the games when my wife goes to the mall across the street, when they ask me if I need help I just tell them "no, I'm not buying anything; your manager is a jackass"

Now Circut City didn't mind me checking out my DVDs but we don't have one of those locally.

That's funny. I took some disks to Best Buy about a year ago and told them I was going to buy a DVD player but wanted to make sure it would play my DVDs- they let me try it out on all the DVD players they had connected to a TV.

Tried the same thing at Circuit City- they didn't have any DVD players hooked up and wouldn't plug any in so I could try them. I waited till the manager walked by and said "guess I'll just have to go to Best Buy where I can get some customer service".
