  1. I have had a Sony DRU500A for 6 months now and I needed another burner would for my 2nd PC. The A06u at CompUSA for $119.00 after rebates seemed to be the way to go.

Both my PCs are Win98SE and sadly DVDShrink doesn't completely work with the A06 and it works just fine with my Sony DRU500A.

Yes, I went to DVDShrink.org and checked out the FAQ and updated my ASPI drivers etc. Still no go. DVDShrink/Nero 6.0 are just awesome together and I'd really like to be able to use this solution rather than DVDDecrypter/DVDShrink/Nero 6.0 (which does work just fine.)

DVDShrink works as expected for the DVD9 to DVD5 conversion but it won't do the Decrypting/Ripping phase that I have to resort to using DVDDecrypter.

Has everybody else had no problem using DVDShrink with the 106/A06 for decrypting or is it just me?

    Thanks for your help!

  2. Did you update your firmware for the new drive? I have an ASUS 402 p/d, which is the same hardware as the A06 and I have no problems with 98SE.

  3. I have just got an A06 and have had no problems so far with DVD Shrink.

  4. I've been using an A06/106 for some time and never had any problems, either with the original firmware or the upgraded region free firmware so I think you need to look elsewhere for the root of your problems.

  5. Thanks for your speedy replies. It's guys like you that make DVDRHelp AWESOME. I send friends here all the time.

My current "factory" firmware is 1.07 so I opted not to update the firmware from Pioneer because it also appears to be 1.07.

It seems like I've done "everything" to get DVDShrink to fully work short of installing the gray-market firmware at:

    http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/DVR-106D%20v1.07%20-%20RPC-1%20+%202xDVD-R%20+%2012xRip.zip

Seems like that's my next step and I'll get back to y'all tomorrow.

FYI, the sypmtom is that when I click on "Open Disk" where DVDShrink does it's initial analysis, it errors with a "failed to read" error on any commercial DVD. Previously burnt DVDs open just fine. I can use DVDDecrypter and then DVDShrink, but I'm lazy. Ya know what I mean?

Interesting Problem I have the 106D(Firmware 1.07) which is similar and I never had any problems using DVD Shrink , however the ripping/decrypting phase was painfully slow , I also tried it with Smart Ripper V2.41 which could only achieve 2X Maximum , I understand that one can flash the drive to remove what appears to be a restriction on the drive's reading speed however I have already killed a drive doing this and don't want to go down that road . I have never had any read errors however , but with some types of media the drive will curiously burn the disks quite happily but then will be unable to read them afterwards , however the disks will work in a normal DVD-ROM Drive .

Hey Smitty, get with the program. It's called UPGRADING YOUR OS! Just messin with ya, although I do think it's time you got a better OS then Win98ME, perhaps that's where the problem lies? And if it's says "Can't read media", maybe the lens of the drive is dirty. Also as suggested, a firmware update (if available) is always a good decision.

Hehee Doh! I haven't upgraded to XP because:

    A. To date 98 has filled the bill. The only thing I barely miss is NTFS support. It would be darn handy for those big captures.

    B. I can't get a free and upgradeable copy of XP. Call me cheap.

THE ANSWER to my problem: Both my brother and I bought the Pioneer A06u from CompUSA on Dec 27th. When we installed and used his DVDShrink worked fine and I checked to make sure that he had the latest firmware (1.07) for his XP machine. A few days later I installed and used my A06 and incorrectly ASSUMED that my burner was also rev. 1.07. Nope, it was 1.05 or 1.06. Odd though that the boxes were touching each other on the shelf and they'd have different firmware. LESSON LEARNED.

A couple nights ago I patched with the Pioneer firmware and then the 12X rip patch and all is super-duper with DVDShrink now.

THANKS AGAIN for your help folks!

For future reference: You can't upgrade 98ME to XP. I mean you cna physically do it, but it will be a crashing flaky operating system. You also need to uninstall every application you have and re-install them after the upgrade.

Start from scratch, it works muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better.

Try viewing the disk in PowerDVD or WinDVD to 'unlock' the disk first. This is a problem associated primarily with 98 and DVD's (98 has no native support for DVD's and the CSS encryption, its and addon that usually works).

Thanks - I'm a "from scratch" kinda guy anyway. I was planning on dual booting cuz I just won't let my beloved 98SE go...

Thx for the tip on playing the DVD first.
