I'm curious why is it possible to do a simple copy disc proceedure, to copy a ps2 game, but you can't play it without a mod chip? Aren't you making an exact copy of it?

  2. It's because sony puts a 'code' in the lead-in area of the disc as a method of copy protection. Because your dvd-r has it's own lead-in info and cannot be altered we must use a mod-chip to circumvent it.

  3. A PS2 DVD-ROM is bootable as was the PS1 and you cant copy the boot sectors of the disc so the mod chip among other things boots the PS2 and then the backup takes over when booted
this is how someone explained the 'copy protection' to me
