Has anyone experimented with Anamorphic SVCDs? I've been thinking that there would be a chance that some players would read the Mpeg's headers first, and just fallow the same rules it recives from a DVD mpeg stream. It's smart enough to resize 480x480 and 352x480 into a 4:3 aspect ratio... I'm thinking of testing it out later today, a 352x240 16:9 Anamorphic encode. It might prove interesting.

You can't have a 16:9 (that's not anamorphic by the way) DAR for anything but 704 or 720 wide DVD resolutions. You can encode it but you won't be able to author it.
You can do a non-complient SVCD burn, but it's up to your player to deal with it. Most will treat it as 4:3 despite what you encode it to since that's the specification for VCD/SVCD.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Well, actually my DVD Player IS capable of anamorphic playback of 352x240 content on MiniDVD. The thing is it has to be 29.97FPS, none of that 3:2pull down stuff. It then resizes the 352x240 image to be wide screen and it plays back. The issue is my player attempts a feild bob deinterlace on the 240p material when it see's the pulldown flags, makes the out put look like crap.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has attempted a similar experiment with SVCDs? I suppose it'd all really depend it the DVD Player makes assumptions, or if it will read and utalize the Anamorphic system... -
I do most of my encoding in 16:9 SVCD format with TMPGenc as well as with Vegas's MainConcept encoder and never had any problem nor any has been reported from my posts on UseNet...
WinDVD automatically resizes its window to 16:9 and my JVC SetTop Player never complained...
As for the SVCD Spec, well I never found nothing regarding A/R saying that it has to be 4:3...
