a little reading of the forum posts would help...

    but
    1. whats the total size of the VIDEO_TS folder?
    2. if its less than 4.4 gigs all you have to do is open Toast 6, click DATA then DVD-ROM (UDF) then NEW DISC and drag the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders to the toast window.

    then click burn.

    easy isnt it

Are you certain Toast 5 doesn't burn to DVD-RW? You choose DVD under the Other tab, click new disc and drag in your VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder and burn. Many Apple Superdrives have the DVD-RW ability disabled by the rom, so are you sure your burner allows DVD-RW burning?

toast 5 will burn to dvd-rw using the method described above

what type of drive do you have?
have you successfully burned -r disks because its the same way you just use a -rw disk instead

    keep us posted

I did a Google search, since this site's DVD Writer database had no listing for the UJ-816:

Still found no info on the UJ-816, but some on the UJ-815 - which is not capable of DVD-RW (until the firmware is "upgraded").

The UJ-815/816 seem to be the drives Apple is putting in Powerbooks??

There is a firmware upgrade for the UJ-815, to improve the read/write speeds and restore DVD-RW capability - which Apple "degraded" in their version of the firmware. A version for the UJ-816 is "in testing".

    Link is: http://superdrive.cynikal.net/

There is an interesting Q & A section at the above link:

    Q: Apple says their powerbooks support 2x dvd-r and 16x cd-r though
A: Actually, this is only a recent capability. As of September 16th, 2003, all new powerbooks shipping with superdrives, now use a drive model UJ-816, which I haven't actually heard of before anywhere. There has been speculation that they're really just using my firmware, but I find this hard to be true.
The new UJ-816 drive has a different firmware, revision DXJ3, which i've tried on my drive but haven't tested fully. It change my drive model to UJ-816 making me feel rather special, other than that, it seems to be similar to the available D101 at the bottom of the page (but with a slightly newer drive model number).

    -- UPDATE - Dec 12th, 2003 --

It's confirmed that the UJ-816 is really a UJ-815 in sheep's clothing, so to speak. Please don't ask me for the UJ-816 firmware, I am not at liberty to release it at this time.
If the Apple firmware (revision DXJ3) in the UJ-816 is "basically the same" as the above-author's "D101" upgrade - your UJ-816 should be able to burn DVD-RW.

    But, who knows for sure???

Also, if the UJ-816 model number is unique to Apple's DXJ3 firmware version - which has only been released since Sept 2003? - it would explain the dearth of information available regarding the UJ-816.

Edit: I was reading more of the above-linked site's FAQ, and found this:

Q: What about the Powerbook's released after September 2003? (the Aluminum 15" and the newer 1 ghz 12" and 1.33 ghz 17" pb)?
A: This drive comes with the UJ-816, which already supports 2x dvd-r and 1x dvd-rw, as well as 16x cd-r. Therefore, this firmware is unnecessary on this version of the powerbook superdrive.
It appears you should be able to burn DVD-RW at 1x.

EDIT on 1/1/04 at 14:26 West-coast time, since I confused "-RW" with "+RW". As the original post is regarding "-RW" - this post is probably not of any help.

I don't remember seeing any reference to which version of OS X you are using, but Jaguar (10.2.x) does not support DVD+RW from the Finder. You need Panther (10.3.x) for Finder-level support of DVD+RW.

If you are running with 10.3.x - the problem lies elsewhere.

here is the message i get

    the drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x03, 0x01

hardware error means that my superdrive cannot burn dvd-rw's??

i am running 10.3.x but i dont think any apple dvd burner will write to dvd+rw,all the apple superdrive write only the dvd-r and -rw format.

For the Pre G5 models the "apple" installed superdrive only does - media. It can however if you install a -/+ drive yourself.

But as I understand the G5 comes with a drive that can do BOTH - and + media types

Sorry for my confusing post about +RW on 10.2/10.3, see my edit in that post.

The previous mention of "RW" copying from the finder had struck a cord, since I had installed a Sony U10A in my G4 450 specifically to get -/+ capability - and have burned +RW from Toast 6, and the Finder, in 10.3

I'll have to make a New Year's resolution to "Think before Posting".
