New DVD Writer -Nero changing burn speed no longer available

Hi People

Just bought myself a cheap DVD burner (BTW DVD+-RW) shows up as
DVDRWIDE1004. I had to install the OEM version of Nero that came with
it Version 5.5.10.49 bundled and when I go to burn a DVD I can only
burn at the speed it allows. Nothing else available in drop-down.
Does anyone know a fix for this as I may need to burn some dvd-r's at
slower speeds (can't pull anything else down in drop-down list).

Any help gratefully accepted.

PS My mate lent me a DVD-R which played fine on my Acoustic Solutions until I hit the pause button for a minute or so. After that wouldn't play properly even bouncing to before and letting play again. Does the laser do something to DVD-R's?

PPS Thought I had posted this yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared (must have just previewed it).

My guess is that the problem lies somewhere in the version of Nero you are using. I've seen posts where people reported solving similar problems by downloading a newer version. Try downloading version 6.x from www.nero.com. I bet that once u do, you'll see the drop down menu return.

Mine is nec 1300a which with org firmware did 1x media at 1x.
upgraded firmware to allow 2x burn on 1x media, works great but does not allow 1x burn now.
