Changing audio formats within a DVD...

I have a DVDR someone gave me, the audio will not play on my Toshiba player but will play on my Xbox. DVD2One says this audio it on 'MPEG 2ch' format. How can I change that to a more compatible format which my Toshiba will hangle? It's only the audio thats the problem, the video is fine, and this is in VOB format.

OK after further reading, I see that 'most, but not all' players will play MPEG 2ch audio. So apparently my Toshiba SD-2900 doesn't support it. I assume converting the audio to AC3 format would fix this, but I don't know the procedure for doing this. Every guide I've read for converting audio assumes your file is audio-only, ie MP3 or WAV etc. All I have at this point is the DVDR given to me, with the files in VOB format. Given this, how do I convert just the audio to a more compatible format like AC3? Thanks in advance.

I believe BeSweet can save audio as AC3, give it a try, not 100% certain as I use MP2, which is thinking about it, where you're problems are

Actually that's not entirely true about Ac3 files being large compared to mp2 (especially with 2 channels only). It all depends on the bitrate so an mp2 at 224 will be roughly the same size as an Ac3 (or even an mp3) at the same bitrate

I've never done this personally, but my guess would be to use VOBEdit and demux the audio stream out of the VOB files.

Then, use ffmpeggui02c (the graphical interface for ffmpeg) to convert the audio to MP2 or AC3 audio (yours is probably mp3 audio which is not part of the official DVD standard and is thus not supported on all players).

You can then remux that stream back into the VOB files using VOBEdit.

These are freeware programs. There are probably others out there that would make this much easier, but I like to stick with methods that everyone can use.

Not true at all. You are probably thinking about LPCM, which is uncompressed audio.

I was able to solve my problem, that is to say I was able to get my Toshiba player to play the audio. I had to go into the DVD player setup and change the Audio Out Select from 'bitstream' to 'PCM', then it played the MPEG 2ch audio fine. But I have to switch it back when done, in order to get my dolby 5.1 to work. Yeah, I'm learning.
