I'm a newbie and I don't understand firmware all that much. All I know is that it is basically a driver for your cd or dvd drive. I've heard that there is a bad firmware update for my Lite-On 411s and was wondering which update it is and if I should download it. If I shouldn't download it, how should I update it?

You should go to the Lite-On website and update to FSOF if this isn't what you have. The "buggy" firmware was FSOG and they removed it from the Lite-On site.

I hope this doesn't upset anybody ... but here goes ...

Lite-On removed FSOG for 411s from their site
http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/english/index-english.htm
Looking at the above link, Lite-On must have found the bugs, reported on the forum, with the new FSOG firmware for the 411s. It is no longer available.
I have been drooling over the new bitsetting tool (I have a 451s) but it seems that it only works with the 411s/811s and the newest (removed) firmware. I would think twice about updating for a while to use this new tool.

I think FS0G may have been removed not because of bugs but more because of security holes ie Bit setting now works with FS0G.
In short FS0G may make the 411S too hackable?

OCFreak, any news from your Liteon tech contact on why FSOG was removed?

There has been a problem reported when recording DVD+RW at 2.4x.
Also, here is the correct link that takes you streight to the Lite-On firmware page.

The firmware was likely removed because we reported the bug with 2.4x RW burns. They'll replace it in a couple days when they find the bug. Everything is not a conspiracy.

Looks like they yanked other new FW versions just released during Christmas; HS0J for the 811S is gone, too.

Yeah they did. I wonder if they are going to fix other problems with the firmware, like dvd-r's not finishing the finalize process. It gets to the finalize then the red light stays on forever so i have to reboot to get it to stop burning. The i checked the disk and it started writing over the data it allready wrote. i switched back to fsof. Since some people here are close with lite on, put in a word for me. Thankyou

I've had problems doing a dvd+rw format also and my Ritek GO4's have worse error rates with it so I went back to HSOE and they burn great again.
Hopefully they fix the rewrite problem and tweak the write stratagy so it keeps the good parts of the older firmware and still includes better support for the new media they added.

to Beefy:
I have the same problem. After I flash my 411s to FSOG, it begins
unable to finalize DVD-R. I don't have such problem with FS0F.
The disk wrote with FS0G became unreadable after reboot.
Hope they can solve this problem soon.

My contacts have informed me that they removed it because of the serious DVD+RW writing bug| in HS0J and FS0G.
I don't think anyone needs to worry about the bitsetting support as Lite-On is also working on this for some OEM customers (and thus some commands is implemented in the latest firmware)....that is why someone was able to write the bitsetting tool in the first place.
