I was wondering if anyone here had ever heard of any problems like what I am having with this converting my LDW-401S to a LDW-411S. I follow the rules exactly:

    1) started wtih LDW-401S w/ ES0G firmware
    2) backed up EEPROM and Firmware with ltnflash
    3) used ltnflash to program drive with 411 eeprom
    4) used ltnflash to load 411 firmware
    5) patced my original EEPROM file
    6) loaded this patched EEPROM file on the drive

The drive is then recognized as a 411S with FS02

(I then upgraded with the latest 411S firmware FS0G)

Every burn I do seems to be successful and by looking at the DVD, you can tell something was written to it, but everything reports it is a blank DVD. I then loaded back my original unpatched 401S EEPROM and firmware and did the same burn and it worked.

I have no interest in -R(W), I just want to be able to load the latest firmware for the 411S since it allows you to change the booktype.

Since they just came out with the bitsetting utility for the 411, I'd wait a few days and see if someone doesn't come up with the same for the 401 before I went through all that. After all, how long have you had it with out the bitsetting anyway ?

The bitsetting was made possible by the new firmware. The 401 just got new firmware a few weeks back so it will probably be a while before it gets another firmware, and whose to say it will have the bitsetting ability. I have only had this drive a couple of months, but because of the bitsetting issue, I never burn +R on this drive. I burn to +RW, then take to work and copy on my Philips drive.

Well, the 411 had 2 firmware updates since I got it 2 weeks ago so I wouldn't depend on that. and one of the main reasons for firmware updates is to make the writers more compatible with more media so why would the 411 need more compatibility and the 401 not ? Plus take a chance on voiding the waranty. The bitsetting ability seems to be something that some OEM's wanted to be available so who knows about that. I would try http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/english/english-talk/talk.asp to see if anyone can help you there.

I found the problem to be that the new firmware for the 411 that allowed bitsetting (FS0G) had a bug in it concerning +RW. I did the change from 401S to 411S and used FS0F and it works great. The bitsetting firmware (FS0G) works for +R, but you get a bad burn on +RW.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. They'll probably post a new bitsetting firmware shortly. I thought it only affected the 2.4x +RW. I'm using 4x +RW with FSOG and my burns are fine.

For some reason with Nero 6 I am only given the choice of 2.4x for RW on the 401S and the 411S. Is this because the media is only 2.4x media? The media actually doesn't mention the speed anywhere on it.

Probably- 4x +RW media is not that common. They do sell Memorex 4x+RW at Sears that is the same media code as the disc that comes with the 411s (ricohjpn). You could try that.

Yeah, I noticed that DVDInfo Pro had the ability to read the media codes. (I had it installed, but never noticed the media codes option). Anyway, the +RW discs I have been using are definitley 2.4x media.

There is a new tool out called bookType for lite on. I havn't used it yet and I don't realy need to change the booktype. You could see if that progy will do what you want.

Yeah, that is the tool that just recently made for the LiteOn 411S and 811S. That tool was made because the latest firmwares for those 2 drives allowed bitsetting. So if you have a 411S drive with FS0G firmware, the bitsetting tool will work. If the firmware doesn't allow bitsetting, then no software can be written to make it allow bitsetting. Unfortunately there were bugs in this firmware (concerning 2.4x +RW burns) and the firmware was pulled from the LiteOn site. Also, the latest firmware for the 401S came out in early December and it does not allow bitsetting. So the tool doesn't work for it.
