  1. when i convert my avi files to mpeg2, whenever there is a scene when the scenery is moving you can notice that it isnt a smooth picture. i want to convert to pal format and i wanted to know why this happens, how to fix it (if possible) and wht setting i should be using.

the resolution on the source files is varied alot so i can't give an answer (i'm encoding anime episodes to be more precise) and the output varies aswell but i mostly use 720x576 for the resolution. it all depends on how many episodes i want on a dvd. anyway the framerate is jumpy on everything so i dont think the problem lies within the resolution and bitrate.

I suppose we can assume that you are encoding at the same frame
    rate as the capture.
Sounds like you may be looking at it on a computer and seeing
interlaced frames . What exactly does "not a smooth picture" mean ?

  11. what i mean by not having a smooth picture is when ever u see the camera (pretend there is a camera filming what's going on) moving lets say on the scenary or scrolling up a person, when this happens u can see that it isnt perfect and it misses a frame. thats the best i can explain it i hope somebody knows what i mean.

In that case I'd look at both the source and the encode
    frame by frame with Vdub
    ....unless you already did.
If it's not interlacing or Mpeg blocks , it's missing or added frames.
Is the frame count the same ?

  13. Are you using the pulldown setting? If so, that's the problem, it sucks.
