  1. I have a Belkin USB2 pci controller card installed in my PC, but when I plug a USB device into it it only seems to work at USB1 speed.

Here is a screenshot of my USB controllers in device manager, you can see the top one is the USB2 controller.

When I plug a usb2 device into the card, in this case a Freecom FM-10 512MB USB2 Stick I get the following error. (this is the only USB2 device I have available to test)

This is where the Freecom FM-10 is located in device manager when I connect it.

Can anyone shed any light on to why this is not working as a USB2 device as it should.

The only thing I can think of is that I am running this PC's power supply to the limit, and there is just not enough power for the USB2 card so it reverts to USB1. I have an antec 350W power supply and this PC is absolutely chock a block. I have ordered an antec 550W supply but I will not get it until the new year. Could the lack of power cause this ?

  2. You can test the Power supply limit theory by unplugging all the unused IDE devices, like the CD/DVD-rom's and floppy drive. As for not reading the USB 2. I was under the impression that if you use USB 2 in a USB 1 then it will default to the slower speed. Just like PC133 SDRAM slows to PC100 SDRAM when inserted in that slower slot. Try the card in a different PCI slot??

  3. From the look of the screen capture and the verbage in the message I am assuming that you are running XP. If this is true then you will need to upgrade to XP SP1. Native XP does not have built in support for USB2.0. This will be easy if you are using a registered copy of XP. Else you will have some difficult but not impossible hurdles to pass.

It does read it, just as USB 1 not 2. I am plugging a usb 2 device into a USB 2 card. I can try unplugging a lot of my devices, just could not be bothered to do it right now, as it reassigns all my drive letters.

I do have a legit version of XP, one of the perks of working at an educational establishment, I get it free. I have never installed a service pack (if it aint broke dont fix it, and I have heard that they can cause problems in the past) but if I need to, to get USB2 support then I will. I would have thought though if it reported the PCI USB2 card in device manager as USB2 then it would be supported.

Not sure about this, but you might not need all of SP1. Check the MS site for USB2 support. I agree, SP1 adds a lot of junk along with some minor fixes.

yep you have to install sp1 ans then if all goes well it shouls say

Standard Enhanced PCI to Usb Controller

if it does not just double clickwhere it says standard usb controller and let Xp automatically install device and thats it

oh and make sure u have uninsalled any third party usb device drivers

I hear ya. Normally I would not recommend such a thing but after several failed attempts to force the system to recognize my USB 2.0 devices I gave up and installed it. The other thing that forced my hand was that that XP would not play nice with my 160GB drive. Seems that native XP does not support LBA above 138(?)GB. Installing SP1 corrected that issue as well.
